Primary Focus: COBOL Development

Position SummaryThe AFSVision Servicing COBOL Developer designs, develops, maintains, tests, and supports the AFSVision Servicing platform. The role focuses on the COBOL-based commercial lending servicing engine responsible for calculations, processing, accounting, reporting, real-time events, and nightly batch processing.

The developer works closely with Product Management, Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, Operations, and Architecture teams to deliver reliable product enhancements and production support for regulated financial-services clients.

Core Responsibilities

- Design, code, test, debug, document, and maintain COBOL programs supporting AFSVision Servicing.
- Analyze business and product requirements and translate them into maintainable technical solutions.
- Develop and support online, event-driven, and batch-processing components.
- Create and optimize embedded SQL and DB2 interactions for transactional processing.
- Troubleshoot production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and implement lasting corrections.
- Participate in technical design reviews, code reviews, release planning, and regression testing.
- Maintain compatibility across base product code, client-specific configurations, and multiple supported product versions.
- Contribute to modernization initiatives, including source analysis, refactoring, API enablement, and coexistence of legacy and modernized components.

Required Technical Skills1. COBOL Development
- Advanced COBOL programming and structured application-development skills.
- Experience maintaining and enhancing large, complex, transaction-intensive codebases.
- Proficiency with COBOL copybooks, shared libraries, common program structures, and generated code.
- Experience with embedded SQL, file processing, error handling, debugging, and performance analysis.




- Ability to support interactive processing, continuously running event workloads, and scheduled batch cycles.

2. Database and Transaction Processing
- Strong SQL development skills and hands-on experience with IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, or an equivalent enterprise relational database.
- Understanding of transaction integrity, data reconciliation, restart and recovery, and high-volume processing.
- Ability to diagnose and tune database-intensive application behavior.

3. Runtime, Middleware, and Integration
- Experience developing and supporting COBOL applications in Linux or distributed environments.
- Familiarity with Micro Focus Enterprise Server or a comparable distributed COBOL runtime.
- Working knowledge of CICS- and JES-style transaction and batch concepts.
- Experience integrating applications through IBM MQ or similar messaging technology.
- Understanding of REST APIs, service-oriented architectures, and integration with Java-based workflow or application services.

4. Testing, Quality, and Operations
- Experience creating unit, integration, regression, reconciliation, and production-validation tests.
- Ability to investigate defects across application, database, messaging, and batch-processing layers.
- Experience supporting mission-critical applications with strong availability, data-integrity, and audit requirements.
- Disciplined use of source control, build, release, deployment, and technical-documentation practices.

Lending and Financial Services




- Understanding of commercial loan servicing or comparable financial transaction-processing systems.
- Knowledge of loan accounting concepts such as accruals, interest, fees, payments, invoicing, commitments, letters of credit, syndications, general-ledger interfaces, and reporting.
- Awareness of control, audit, security, and regulatory expectations in banking environments.

- Ability to understand complex business rules and translate them into precise application logic.
- Clear written and verbal communication with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

- Ability to manage competing delivery and support priorities in an iterative development environment.

Preferred Skills
- Experience with COBOL modernization, automated code analysis, refactoring, or COBOL-to-Java transformation.
- Experience supporting parallel legacy and modernized product versions.
- Familiarity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, web services, DevOps pipelines, application monitoring, and SaaS delivery models.
- Experience with commercial lending, syndicated lending, or loan-accounting platforms.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated professional experience developing and supporting enterprise COBOL applications.
- Experience with SQL and relational databases in production transaction-processing environments.
- Financial-services or commercial-lending experience is strongly preferred.
