ROLE PURPOSE

RightWalk's tech platform serves citizens at national scale — helping ITI apprentices, students, and applicants access government entitlements and services via WhatsApp and the web. The platform handles thousands of concurrent users across multiple domains (apprenticeships, education, municipal services) and runs on Go backends, Python MCP servers, PostgreSQL databases, AI-powered agents, and modern web front ends.

As a Full Stack Engineer, you will design, build, and ship features end to end — from responsive user interfaces and admin dashboards to APIs, data models, and cloud deployment. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will work closely with the Solution Architect, the Technical Product Manager, and AI specialists to turn product requirements into reliable, secure, and well-documented software.

This is a hands-on, high-ownership role. You are expected to write production-quality code across the stack, understand the trade-offs behind technical decisions, and leave every part of the codebase better documented than you found it.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Front-End Development

- Build responsive, accessible web applications and internal dashboards using React / Next.js and TypeScript.
- Translate Figma designs and product requirements into clean, reusable UI components with consistent state management.
- Integrate front ends with REST/GraphQL APIs, handling authentication, error states, and loading performance.
- Optimise page performance, cross-browser compatibility, and mobile responsiveness for users on low-bandwidth networks.
- Write unit and end-to-end tests (Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright/Cypress) for critical user flows.

2. Back-End & API Development

- Design and build RESTful/GraphQL APIs and microservices in Go and Python (FastAPI/FastMCP), with Node.js where appropriate.
- Model data and write efficient queries in PostgreSQL — schema design, indexing, migrations, and query tuning.
- Integrate third-party services: WhatsApp Business API, government portals, payment gateways, and LLM inference providers.
- Implement authentication and authorisation (OAuth 2.0, JWT, role-based access control) and secure API practices.
- Build background jobs, caching (Redis), and message-queue consumers to keep the platform rapid under load.

3. DevOps, Cloud & Code Quality

- Containerise services with Docker and deploy to AWS (EC2, ECS/Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFront).
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or similar), automated testing, and database migration frameworks.
- Instrument services with logging, metrics, and alerting; take part in on-call rotations, incident response, and post-mortems.
- Participate in code reviews, uphold coding standards, and maintain test coverage for every feature you ship.

4. Security, Compliance & Documentation

- Follow secure coding practices (OWASP Top 10) and help close vulnerabilities identified in security audits and VAPT.
- Implement DPDP Act 2023 requirements in product features: consent flows, data minimisation, retention policies, and audit trails.
- Document APIs, system flows, data models, and deployment steps in version control so any engineer can pick up your work.
- Contribute to onboarding material and knowledge sharing so the platform does not depend on tribal knowledge.

5. AI-Enabled Product Features

- Build user-facing features on top of LLM-based agents, including chat interfaces, RAG workflows, and MCP tool integrations.
- Work with AI specialists on prompt engineering, response evaluation, and model-agnostic integration patterns.
- Collaborate with the Technical Product Manager on scope, user feedback, and technical feasibility trade-offs.
- Stay current on web, cloud, and AI tooling and recommend improvements to the team.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE — YEAR 1

- Ship multiple end-to-end features to production — front end, API, data layer, and deployment — with minimal hand-holding.
- Own at least one product module (e.g. user dashboard, admin console, or a citizen-facing web flow) as its primary engineer.
- Improve front-end performance and reliability measurably: faster load times, fewer production defects, and better test coverage.
- Every feature you build is documented, tested, and covered by CI/CD — new engineers can understand and extend it without your help.
- Contribute to security hardening and DPDP compliance work, with no critical vulnerabilities open in code you own.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

- Experience: 3–6 years building and shipping full-stack web applications in production.
- Front-end: Strong in JavaScript/TypeScript, React (Next.js a plus), HTML5, CSS3, and modern styling (Tailwind CSS or similar). Solid grasp of state management (Redux, Zustand, or React Query), responsive design, and web accessibility (WCAG).
- Back-end: Proficient in at least one of Go, Python (FastAPI/Django), or Node.js (Express/NestJS). Experience designing RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs and microservices.
- Databases: PostgreSQL (schema design, indexing, query optimisation, migrations); familiarity with Redis and NoSQL stores such as MongoDB or DynamoDB. Exposure to pgvector is a plus.
- Cloud & DevOps: Hands-on with AWS, Docker, CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or similar), Git workflows, and Linux fundamentals.

- Testing & quality: Writes unit, integration, and end-to-end tests; comfortable with code reviews and clean-code principles.
- Security: Working knowledge of OWASP Top 10, OAuth 2.0/JWT authentication, role-based access control, and secure handling of personal data.
- AI/LLM literacy: Has integrated, or is keen to integrate, LLM APIs (OpenAI, Bedrock, open-source models) into products; understands RAG and prompt-engineering basics.
- Collaboration & communication: Explains technical choices clearly to peers, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders; documents decisions and makes them discoverable.
- Ownership mindset: Takes features from idea to production and owns their quality after release.

NICE-TO-HAVES

- Government, civic-tech, or social-impact product experience (compliance, data residency, auditability).
- WhatsApp Business API or other chat-platform integrations.
- Mobile or PWA development (React Native, Flutter, or Progressive Web Apps).
- Kubernetes, Terraform, or other infrastructure-as-code tools.
- Observability tools: Datadog, CloudWatch, SigNoz, Prometheus, Grafana.
- Message queues and event streaming: Kafka, RabbitMQ, or AWS SQS/SNS.
- Multilingual / Indic-language UI and localisation experience.
