Senior Software Engineer, Product and Front-end
About This Role
- The Senior Software Engineer, Product and Front-end will help build Prudential Japan's next generation Product Engineering capabilities as part of the Japan Technology Transformation initiative.
- This role is responsible for designing, building, and operating digital products and platforms that support customer journeys, sales journeys, policy administration experiences, and business workflows across Prudential Japan's end-to-end journey of life insurance value streams.
- As part of a newly established Product Engineering organization, this role offers the opportunity not only to build products, but also to help establish engineering practices, standards, and ways of working that will shape the future of technology delivery at Prudential Japan. What you could work on We allocate after offer, across multiple domains. Customer servicing, portals used by our employees as well as customers to view policy information and execute certain business workflows.
Sales
Enablement, portal used by our sales team to manage leads and maintain regulatory records.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build customer-facing journeys, and the internal tools staff use when a customer cannot complete one alone.
- Model identity, consent and authority as first-class concepts, including the cases where one person acts on anotherʼs behalf.
- Work directly with the staff who handle these requests today, watching real cases rather than reading summarised tickets.
- Design for users of every age and confidence level, treating accessibility as a design constraint rather than an audit term.
- Instrument journeys so drop-off, error and abandonment are visible,
then act on what they show.
- Share the APIs your journeys need together with their backend owners, rather than accepting whatever exists.
- Work closely with systems engineers, architects and business partners to ensure the quality and reliability of the product, and to deliver on business objectives.
- Work alongside long-lived legacy systems and decide, case by case, what to wrap, what to replace and what to leave alone.
- Engage with broader product considerations and planning across ideation, design, development, testing, business engagement and team leadership.
- Carry on-call for what you own, and run incident reviews that look for causes rather than for someone to blame.
Qualifications
General
- You do not need insurance experience. We will teach the domain.
- Five or more years in product engineering with genuine front-end depth, TypeScript and a modern framework.
- Demonstrated accessibility practice, with examples of what you changed and why.
- Experience in designing workflow and state and not only screens.
- User research or direct observation as a normal part of how you work.
- Advantageous: contact center or telephone integration, identity, consent or KYC workflows, and designing for older or less confident users.
- Degree in relevant field or equivalent practical experience.
Technical
- We run on AWS. We are not dogmatic about languages or frameworks and we do not screen on keyword matches: we care that you have gone deep in at least one stack and can pick up another. Depth in one column beats a shallow tick in all of them.
- AI assisted development: Claude, Codex, Copilot or Cursor. Knowing how to build Agent skills is an advantage.
- Frontend: TypeScript with React, and a framework such as Next.js. Robust CSS and layout skills
- Testing: component and end-to-end testing as a habit. Playwright, Vitest or Jest and accessibility checks in the pipeline.
- Design systems: consuming one, contributing to one, and knowing when to break it.
- Backend for frontend: API gateway with lambda or a small service, enough to own the layer your journeys depend on.
- AWS ecosystem
- Nice to have: analytics and session instrumentation (such as Amplitude), design tooling fluency (such as Figma), and telephony and contact centre integration such as Genesys telephony or Amazon Connect.
Language
English: Fluent to Native Japanese: Working level. JLPT N2 or native is an advantage.
Culture and Leadership Expectations
- Act as One Prudential for customers by building integrated products across business domains Drive Change by modernizing legacy systems and improving engineering practices
- Be Highly Accountable for code quality, delivery, reliability, and production outcomes
- Engage with Candor through open collaboration and constructive technical discussion Demonstrate core values: Worthy of Trust, Customer Focused, Respect for Each Other, and Winning with Integrity
