About the JobWe are looking for an experienced Backend & Infrastructure Engineer to work on live production products serving users in North America.

This is a backend-heavy, hands-on engineering role combining Python, Node.js, AWS infrastructure, APIs, AI integrations, deployment, and production operations.

You will work across backend services written in both Python and Node.js, along with the AWS infrastructure they run on. You should be comfortable moving between application code, APIs, databases, Lambda functions, Terraform, deployment pipelines, monitoring, and production troubleshooting.

This is not a frontend or traditional full-stack position. We are looking for someone whose strength is backend engineering and cloud infrastructure, but who is comfortable working across different backend technology stacks.

You will be expected to take real ownership of the systems you work on. There may not always be a separate DevOps engineer responsible for infrastructure, deployments, or production operations.

You may also inherit existing systems with limited documentation and will need to understand how they work, identify weaknesses, and improve them safely.

This is not an ML research or model-training role. You will primarily build the production systems and integrations that allow applications to use LLMs and other AI services reliably.

ResponsibilitiesBackend Development & APIs

- Build and maintain production backend services using Python and Node.js.
- Work with Python frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
- Work with Node.js frameworks such as Express.js, NestJS, or similar frameworks.
- Design, build, and maintain REST APIs and service integrations.
- Develop business logic, data-processing workflows, and backend services.
- Build and maintain AWS Lambda functions using Python and/or Node.js.
- Work with existing services that may use different backend technologies.
- Debug and resolve backend issues across development, staging, and production.
- Write SQL against production data to investigate issues and answer product questions.
- Work with relational and NoSQL databases.

AI & Third-Party Integrations
- Integrate LLMs, transcription platforms, and other AI-powered APIs.
- Work with services such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Gemini, AWS Bedrock, or similar platforms.
- Build clean integration layers rather than tightly coupling vendor-specific logic throughout the application.
- Handle authentication, response validation, timeouts, retries, rate limits, malformed responses, and vendor failures.
- Design fallback and degraded behavior when external services are slow or unavailable.
- Work with structured LLM outputs and response validation.
- Track AI API cost, latency, token usage, and request volume.




- Build integrations that remain maintainable as external providers and APIs evolve.

AWS Infrastructure & Operations
- Own and extend AWS infrastructure supporting production applications.
- Work with services including: Lambda, EC2, API Gateway, S3, RDS / PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, IAM, CloudWatch, SQS, EventBridge
- Work across development, staging, and production environments.
- Manage infrastructure using Terraform or similar Infrastructure as Code tools.
- Maintain appropriate separation between environments and Terraform state.
- Implement and maintain deployment pipelines and CI/CD.
- Manage IAM users, roles, policies, and least-privilege access.
- Manage application secrets and environment configuration.
- Configure logging, monitoring, metrics, and production alarms.
- Monitor AWS cost, capacity, and application health.
- Maintain backups and ensure restoration processes actually work.

Quality & Production Ownership
- Write automated unit, integration, and API tests.
- Test failure scenarios involving external APIs and infrastructure dependencies.
- Investigate production failures across application code, infrastructure, authentication, databases, and external vendors.
- Participate in code reviews and architecture discussions.
- Improve existing systems without unnecessarily rewriting working software.
- Identify technical debt and production risks and communicate them clearly.
- Take ownership of changes from development through deployment and production monitoring.
- Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly while reviewing and owning the resulting code.

- 4+ years of professional backend/software engineering experience
- Strong production experience with Python
- Hands-on production experience with Node.js
- Experience building and maintaining backend services in both ecosystems

What We're Looking ForWe don't expect someone to be equally deep in every technology.

The ideal profile is

Strong backend engineer → strong Python → good production Node.js → robust AWS/infrastructure → hands-on AI integration experience.

Python should remain one of your strongest technologies, but you should also be capable of independently working on production Node.js services, understanding an existing Node.js codebase, building APIs and services, debugging issues, and deploying them to production.

We are not looking for someone whose Node.js experience is limited to occasional scripts or basic frontend tooling.

Similarly, this is not a role where infrastructure can simply be handed to a separate DevOps team. You should be comfortable understanding and operating the AWS environment that runs your application.
