Instructional Designer

Turn expert knowledge into clear, visual lessons that help people without a college degree build real careers in the skilled trades.

About SkillCat
SkillCat is America's largest online trade school — over 400,000 students trained in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other skilled trades. We're a venture-backed startup on a mission to get non-college-educated workers into excellent careers, and our courses are how we do it.

The Role
You'll take technical source material from subject matter experts and turn it into structured, visual, beginner-friendly e-learning lessons. You own each lesson from first brief to publish-ready — including directing the visuals, not just writing the words. It's a hands-on, collaborative role: you'll work daily with content leads, visual designers, and animators to bring lessons to life.

What You'll Own
• Turn topic outlines and learning objectives into step-by-step lessons a complete beginner can follow.
• Write the visual brief for each lesson — describe exactly what a diagram, animation, or labelled photo should show,

what to highlight, and why it helps the learner at that moment.
• Partner with visual designers and animators so the final visuals match your intent, iterating until they're right.
• Keep each lesson accurate and on-scope — verify technical content with SMEs and catch errors in terminology, sequencing, and visual direction before anything goes live.
• Use learner feedback to make your lessons better over time.

What Good Looks Like
Within a few months, you're shipping lessons beginners can follow without getting lost, your visual briefs are clear enough that designers rarely need to ask follow-ups, and your content moves through review without accuracy or consistency issues.

Who You Are
• 0–5 years of experience; we welcome strong early-career talent.
• Excellent English writing with sharp attention to detail — grammar, structure, and consistency.
• You can break a technical concept down into plain l
