The role An SDE 2 at CareFi owns problems, not tickets. You will take a business outcome, work out what needs to be built, design it, ship it, and stay accountable for how it behaves in production.
This is a backend-leaning role on a small team, which means your work will show up in front of hospital staff, ops teams and borrowers within weeks. You will have real say in architecture, and real responsibility when something breaks at 11pm on a discharge that has to clear tonight.
What you will own
- Design and deliver backend services end to end: scoping, data modelling, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and the fixes that follow
- Write a lightweight design doc for anything that spans more than one service or one engineer, and get it reviewed before you build
- Model and evolve financial and claims data correctly. Ledgers, disbursements, repayments and reconciliation have to be right the first time, and auditable afterwards
- Build and maintain integrations with hospitals, insurers, payment providers and logistics partners, including the messy ones with no sandbox and a PDF for documentation
- Raise technical risk, feasibility concerns and scope creep before work starts rather than in the retro
- Review code substantively. Explain the reasoning behind a change request, not just the change
- Mentor SDE 1s and interns through pairing, intentional PR reviews, and unblocking them early
- Own incidents in your domain: triage, mitigate, write the post-incident review, close the action items
- Identify tech debt in the areas you touch and propose a concrete fix alongside the flag
- Keep the documentation for your systems current after every release
What we work with
- Backend: NestJS, TypeScript, Prisma, PostgreSQL
- Cloud and infra: Azure (AKS), containerised services, GitLab CI/CD
- Adjacent: React Native and Flutter clients, OCR and document extraction pipelines, internal ops tooling
- Ways of working: sprint-based delivery, design docs, PR review culture, blameless post-incident reviews. You do not need prior NestJS experience. Robust Node and TypeScript fundamentals transfer in a week or two.
What we are looking for
- 5 to 7 years building and running backend systems in production, with at least 3 years in a typed language on a modern service framework (Node/TypeScript, Java, Go, Python)
- Strong relational database skills: schema design, indexing, query performance, transactions and isolation levels. You can explain why a migration is safe under load
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of at least one non-trivial system or service, including what it cost you to operate it
- Practical experience with API design, third party integrations, idempotency, retries and failure handling
- Comfort with cloud infrastructure and CI/CD. You can deploy, observe and debug your own service without waiting for someone else
- Testing as a default habit, not a compliance step
- Clear written communication. Design docs, PR descriptions and incident notes are part of the job
- Evidence of lifting other engineers: mentoring, reviews, standards, or documentation people actually use
