What You'll Do The Senior Supply Chain Engineer – Mechanical owns the supply of all mechanical commodities that HyPrix buys. The position holder is the domain expert for these commodities, from the first drawing to series production.

The commodities include machined parts, sheet metal, castings, forgings, composites, plastic and elastomer parts, raw materials and fasteners. They also include packaging and transport containers, electromechanical actuators and bought-out propulsion hardware. Other commodities are composite structures, 3D-printed parts and high-temperature alloy parts, which need qualified suppliers and strict process control.

- Commodity strategy. Write and update a sourcing strategy for each mechanical commodity. Include the supplier base, cost targets, lead times, risks and the indigenous content plan.

- Supplier base. Find, audit and qualify suppliers for each process. These processes include CNC machining, sheet metal, casting, forging, composites and additive manufacturing. They also include welding, brazing, injection moulding, heat treatment and surface finish. Set a second source for each single-source part.

- Early design input. Review drawings and 3D models with the design team before release. Give advice on material, tolerance, process and cost, so that each part is easy to make and to buy.

- Composites. Source composite structures and raw materials: carbon and glass fibres, prepregs, resins and core materials. Qualify suppliers for layup, autoclave and out-of-autoclave cure, RTM and filament winding. Control the shelf life and cold storage of prepregs and resins.

- Additive manufacturing. Source metal and polymer 3D-printed parts, for example laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) in titanium, aluminium and nickel alloys. Qualify each supplier on machine, powder control, build parameters and post-process: HIP, heat treatment, machining and inspection.

- High-temperature materials. Source nickel-based superalloys, titanium,

refractory metals and ceramics for parts in high-temperature zones.

- Controlled materials. Identify materials and parts that need end-user certificates or foreign export licences, for example some carbon fibres, prepregs and alloys. Prepare the technical data for these requests. The Senior Manager owns the licence application.

- Tooling. Source moulds, jigs, fixtures and composite layup tools. Record who owns each tool at a supplier site, and control its maintenance.

- Precision bought-out parts. Source bearings, seals, O-rings, springs and other catalogue parts to aerospace standards, with a second source for each.

- Should-cost and negotiation. Make a should-cost model for each key part from material, machine time, set-up and finish. Lead RFQs and compare quotes. Negotiate price, lead time, MOQ and payment terms within the delegation of authority.

- Agreements. Prepare NDAs, statements of work, rate contracts and long-term agreements with key suppliers, together with the Senior Manager. Share drawings and technical data only under NDA, and only to the extent that each supplier needs.

- Quality at source. Agree an inspection plan with each supplier. Do first article inspection (FAI) with the quality team. Agree NDT methods, for example ultrasonic test for composites and CT scan for 3D-printed parts. Control special processes and material certificates. Close non-conformances with the supplier.

- Engineering changes. Take each new drawing or BOM revision from the PLM system, and send it to the affected suppliers. Make sure that each supplier builds to the current revision, and close open orders against old revisions.

- Country of origin. Record the country of origin for each part. Replace parts from restricted countries when the customer or the Ministry of Defence requires it.

- Supplier performance. Keep an OTIF and quality scorecard for each supplier. Hold regular reviews. Get a recovery plan when a supplier misses a date.

- Prototype to production. Move parts from prototype shops to production suppliers. Make sure that each supplier has the capacity, tooling and fixtures for the planned build rate.

- Supplier development. Develop Indian suppliers for mechanical parts that HyPrix now imports. Give them technical support until they qualify.

- Bid support. Supply part costs, lead times and supplier data for proposals and cost estimates.

- Team. Give mechanical RFQ, follow-up and PO tasks to the Supply Chain Engineer. Train the engineer and review the work.

Requirements

Minimum Experience (Years)

6 years of mechanical sourcing, commodity management or supplier development, in aerospace, defence, automotive or precision engineering.

HyPrix prefers this experience, but it is not mandatory. Demonstrated capability is more important than years.

Required Skills

- Mechanical processes. Valuable knowledge of machining, sheet metal, casting, forging and composite processes.

- Materials. Good knowledge of aerospace materials such as aluminium alloys, titanium, steels, nickel alloys and CFRP.

- Drawings. Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T;, and to check a part against its drawing.

- Cost and negotiation. Experience with should-cost models and supplier negotiation.

- Supplier qualification. Experience to audit and qualify suppliers, and to close non-conformances with them.

- Systems. Experience with ERP or MRP systems.

- A bachelor's degree in mechanical, production, aerospace or metallurgical engineering.

Advantageous Skills/Qualifications

- Experience with AS9100 suppliers, FAI to AS9102 and NADCAP special processes.

- Experience with DPSUs, ordnance factories or DRDO-approved suppliers.

- Experience with the move from prototype to low-rate production.

- Experience to source metal additive manufacturing parts, and to qualify the LPBF process and its post-process.

- Experience with prepreg storage, autoclave cure and composite NDT.

- Experience with superalloy or titanium parts for high-temperature zones.

- Knowledge of the indigenous content rules of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP).

- Knowledge of the procurement, storage and transport of energetic materials, and of the PESO licences that they need.

- Knowledge of PLM and CAD viewer tools.
