Job Purpose:

To operate Vertical Turning Lathe (VTL) machines for machining large and heavy components as per approved drawings, process sheets and quality requirements, while ensuring productivity, dimensional accuracy and safe machine operation.

Key Responsibilities:

Operate VTL machines for machining large and heavy components such as pump casings, covers, rings, flanges, shafts and other engineering components.

Read and understand engineering drawings, machining drawings, process sheets and job instructions.

Perform turning, facing, boring, grooving, drilling, threading and other machining operations as required.

Set and operate the machine according to the required job dimensions, tolerances, cutting parameters and machining sequence.

Carry out proper job setting, tool setting and workpiece alignment before starting machining.

Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts and tooling based on the material and machining requirement.

Check job dimensions during and after machining using Vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, dial gauges and other measuring instruments.

Ensure components are machined within specified dimensional tolerances and surface-finish requirements.

Make necessary tool-offset or parameter adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.

Monitor tool wear, machine condition, vibration, coolant and cutting conditions during machining.

Handle loading/unloading and positioning of heavy components using EOT crane / overhead crane / lifting equipment, wherever applicable and authorized.





Maintain proper housekeeping around the machine and follow 5S practices.

Follow all prescribed safety procedures, PPE requirements and machine operating instructions.

Identify abnormalities such as excessive vibration, tool breakage, unusual noise, dimensional variation or machine malfunction and report them to the supervisor.

Maintain production and inspection records as required.

Minimize rejection, rework, tool consumption and machine idle time.

Coordinate with Quality, Production Planning, Maintenance and Tool Room teams whenever required.

Follow preventive maintenance and basic machine-care practices.

Ensure compliance with company quality standards and applicable ISO / API-related manufacturing requirements, where relevant.

Required Skills & Competencies

Good knowledge of VTL machine operation and machining processes.

Ability to understand engineering drawings and GD&T; basics.

Knowledge of cutting tools, inserts and machining parameters.

Valuable understanding of job setting, alignment and tool setting.

Ability to use precision measuring instruments.

Knowledge of machining of cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and other engineering materials would be preferred.

Basic knowledge of CNC controls/programs is desirable for CNC VTL positions.

Ability to work independently and meet production targets.

Strong focus on quality, safety and productivity.

Good troubleshooting and problem-identification skills.

38 years of relevant experience in VTL machining, preferably in:

Heavy engineering

Pump manufacturing

Valve manufacturing

Turbine manufacturing

Automobile / auto-component manufacturing

Foundry / machining industries

Ideal Candidate Profile:

ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Experience in CNC machining, preferably on VTC/VTL machines.

Hands-on experience with Fanuc controls.

Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, quality systems, and shop floor practices.

Ability to read engineering drawings and optimize machining parameters.

Continuous improvement mindset focused on reducing setup time, rework, and rejection.
