Software Stability Expert / CoC System Health, Stability

Unit and team Overview

Infotainment platforms unit is responsible for developing, maintaining and deploying BMW infotainment platform. BMW infotainment platform is Linux (Yocto) based SW platform that provides common automotive functions used by multiple automotive ECUs. The unit is also responsible for cross-cutting concerns of the platform, like architecture, security, stability and performance. The platform is deployed into multiple infotainment domain ECUs, ranging from headunits and rear seat entertainment systems to telematics and audio ECUs.

Stability

The Center of Competence (CoC) 'System Health, Stability' is responsible for monitoring and analyzing stability problems (e.g., system resets, application crashes) for multiple infotainment projects. We automatically scan and pre-filter all logs from test drives to detect stability problems early during development. Supported by a defect front desk, we process more than 1000 stability tickets per month. In conjunction with the development teams, the team expediates solutions to these problems and supports in root cause analysis. As the stability problems need to be solved by the individual teams, a close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders is essential.

As part of the Stability and System Engineering team, you will help ensure the reliability and performance of next-generation Linux- and Android-based automotive control units. A key focus of your role will be defect management: analyzing issues reported during integration, validation, and vehicle drive testing; identifying root causes; and coordinating effective fixes across teams.

You will work closely with architects, software developers, integration teams, test engineers,

and management to assess the impact and priority of defects, provide timely status updates, and improve the stability of software deliveries.

- Manage stability-related defects throughout the software delivery lifecycle, from issue intake and triage through root-cause analysis, resolution, and verification.
- Perform first-hand analysis of high-priority defects, establish their impact and reproducibility, and drive timely investigation with the responsible teams.
- Investigate complex issues involving system stability, performance, boot sequence, memory management, CPU utilization, resource usage, and system services.
- Analyze defects across the Linux kernel, Android framework, HAL, middleware, drivers, and applications.
- Conduct root-cause analysis using debugging, tracing, profiling, and system-analysis tools.
- Analyze crash dumps, kernel panics, ANRs, tombstones, watchdog resets, memory leaks, and other stability-related evidence.
- Review drive-test findings and provide a daily summary of results, including key defects, severity, trends, open risks, and progress, for management and relevant stakeholders.
- Track defect status, ownership, dependencies, and resolution progress, and communicate risks and blockers clearly.
- Create automation scripts and engineering tools for stability analysis, log collection, debugging, and performance monitoring.
- Collaborate with management, architecture, development, integration, validation,

and customer teams to resolve critical platform issues.
- Identify recurring defect patterns and drive continuous improvements in platform reliability, performance, and software quality through data-driven analysis.
