Job Title: Senior International Tax Accountant & Advisor (U.S. International Tax | Foreign Entities & Cross-Border Planning)
Location: Remote
Type: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM ET (including a one-hour break)
About Us
We are a U.S.-based tax, accounting, and advisory firm specializing in domestic and international taxation, cross-border planning, business structuring, and compliance. Our clients include U.S. citizens abroad, foreign nationals with U.S. investments, international entrepreneurs, and companies operating across multiple jurisdictions. We’re growing our international tax practice, with a focus on U.S.–Spain matters.
The Role
We’re hiring an experienced international tax professional to independently prepare complex returns, spot cross-border tax issues, and advise clients on practical solutions. This is not a domestic 1040 role. Substantial, hands-on U.S. international tax experience is the most important qualification.
Top priority: extensive experience with foreign corporations, partnerships, and other business entities, not just foreign individuals.
What You’ll Do
International tax preparation and compliance (core of the role)
- Prepare and review federal and state returns: 1040, 1040-NR, 1120, 1120-S, 1065
- Handle compliance for expats, nonresident aliens, dual-status taxpayers, and internationally operating businesses
- Prepare international forms, including 5471, 5472, 8865, 8858, 1116, 1118, 2555, 8938, FBAR (FinCEN 114), 3520/3520-A, 8621, 8992/8993, K-2/K-3, 8288 series, W-7, and 8802
- Identify filing requirements, deadlines, and penalty exposure; prepare amended returns and corrections
Advisory and planning
- Analyze residency, income sourcing,
and double-taxation risk
- Apply tax treaties and Totalization Agreements
- Advise on FTC, FEIE, and foreign housing exclusions
- Analyze CFCs, Subpart F, GILTI, PFICs, and Section 962 elections
- Evaluate foreign entity classification, ownership structures, intercompany transactions, and related-party reporting
- Support international real estate matters (FIRPTA, foreign rental income, capital gains)
U.S.–Spain and cross-border matters
- U.S.–Spain residency and treaty analysis, including familiarity with Spain’s Beckham Law
- Coordinate with Spanish and other foreign advisors (UK and Mexico experience is a plus). You don’t need to be licensed in foreign tax law, but you should know when to bring in local professionals.
Accounting and review
- Reconcile books to returns; review financial statements and foreign financials
- Analyze basis, capital accounts, distributions, and shareholder loans
- Research complex issues, write tax memos, and communicate directly with clients
- Manage multiple engagements against firm deadlines
What You Bring
Required
- 3–5+ years of U.S. tax preparation experience, with substantial international work
- Proven experience preparing complex international individual and business returns
- Practical experience with Forms 5471, 5472, 1116, 2555, 8938, and FBAR
- Strong grasp of tax residency, foreign income reporting, and foreign tax credits
- Ability to research unfamiliar international issues independently
- Excellent written and spoken English, attention to detail, and deadline discipline
- Ability to work independently in a remote, deadline-driven environment during U.S. business hours
Strongly preferred
- Extensive experience with foreign corporations, partnerships, and business entities
- Experience with 8865, 8858, 8621, 8992, and complex international schedules
- Intuit ProSeries Professional (major advantage); also ProConnect, Lacerte, UltraTax, CCH, or Drake
- QuickBooks Online and Xero
- CPA, EA, or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in accounting, taxation, or finance
- Background in a CPA firm or international tax advisory practice
- Spanish proficiency
- Comfort with AI-assisted research and tax workflow tools
Note: Candidates with only domestic Form 1040 experience will not meet the requirements of this role.
Who Thrives Here
You understand international tax beyond data entry. You can look at a client’s situation and determine the right U.S. reporting, you notice when foreign entities, assets, or residency changes trigger current obligations, and you can explain complex concepts clearly. You take ownership, communicate proactively, and want to grow within an international advisory practice.
Why Join Us
- Challenging multi-jurisdiction engagements with sophisticated structures
- A growing international tax practice with real exposure to preparation, advisory, and business structuring
- A team that values expertise, initiative, and accountability
