About Chariot
Chariot is a frontier AI research lab based in Delhi, building foundation models. We're one of the original four teams selected under the IndiaAI Mission to build models from India. We want our models to work as well in Indian languages as the best AI systems work in English.
The Role
You'll build and own products powered by Chariot's models, from understanding a user's problem and deciding what to build to shipping it, measuring how it performs, and improving it.
This is a hands-on engineering role across the frontend and backend. You'll work directly with users and researchers, make product and engineering decisions, and take responsibility for both the user experience and the systems behind it. Your ownership continues after launch: understanding whether people are getting value, finding where the product falls short, and deciding what to improve next.
What you'll work on
1. Understand users and shape the product. Work directly with users to understand their needs, identify problems worth solving, and decide what to build. Scope work into practical increments and make clear choices about what belongs in the first version and what can wait.
2. Build and ship across the stack. Turn ideas into working products, from interfaces and user flows to APIs and backend services. Own features through implementation, testing, deployment, and iteration.
3. Measure and improve. Decide what success looks like and instrument products to understand how people use them. Use usage data, feedback, and failure patterns to improve the experience and guide what you build next.
4. Own the systems behind your products. Build and operate backend services that perform reliably under real load, including APIs, queues, storage, and integrations with model inference. Improve latency, throughput, reliability, and cost as usage grows.
5. Connect product feedback to model quality.
Work with researchers to understand where models succeed or fail in real use. Build evaluation tools and automated checks that measure the quality of model-powered features, catch regressions, and help guide improvements.
What we look for
- Strong product sense. You can work through an ambiguous user problem, choose what matters, and explain why. You know how to scope a first version, decide what to measure, and use evidence to improve it.
- Extensive experience building and operating backend systems at scale. You've owned production services under real load, handled failures, and made informed tradeoffs around architecture, performance, reliability, and cost.
- Full-stack engineering ability. You're comfortable building usable interfaces and the services behind them, and carrying a feature through to production. You pay attention to the details that make a product clear and easy to use.
- Strong software fundamentals, especially in Python. You write maintainable code, understand distributed systems and data infrastructure, and can investigate problems across the stack.
- Thoughtful use of AI tools. AI tools are part of how you build. You know how to give them useful context, review their output, and verify correctness. You remain accountable for the code, architecture, and user experience you ship.
- Ownership beyond launch. You follow through on adoption, quality, and reliability. You're comfortable revisiting decisions and changing course when something isn't working.
Experience with model serving, GPU infrastructure, large-scale data pipelines, ML evaluation, speech systems, or multilingual products is a strong plus.
How to apply
Send us your resume, links to code or products you've built, and a short note on why this role interests you.
- Tell us about a product or feature you owned end to end: how you chose what to build, the scale and engineering challenges involved, and what you learned from users after launch.
