What you will do
- Model the imaging path in Zemax. Simulate the full optical train — schematic eye, ophthalmoscopy lens, relay optics and the smartphone camera — in sequential mode.
- Optimise image quality. Tune field of view, resolution (MTF), distortion and working distance, and check performance across our validated handsets.
- Design the illumination. Simulate the LED source, annular illumination and polarisers in non-sequential mode, and suppress corneal and lens reflections.
- Check light safety. Calculate retinal exposure and keep it within ISO 15004-2 and IEC 62471 limits.
- Tolerance for manufacture. Run tolerance analysis and turn the results into lens and assembly specifications a vendor can build to.
- Design the hardware. Work with the team in CAD on the lens barrel, phone clamp and alignment features that hold your optical design in place.
- Prototype and test. Build 3D-printed prototypes with off-the-shelf lenses, test them on a model eye, and compare results with your simulations.
- Document everything. Keep lens prescriptions, Zemax files, test results and the bill of materials ready for our regulatory technical file.
Must have
- Your own working access to Zemax OpticStudio (personal or institutional licence) for the whole internship. We do not provide a licence.
- Pursuing or completed a B.Tech, M.Tech or M.Sc in optics,
photonics, physics, electrical or mechanical engineering.
- Strong geometric optics: aberrations, stops and pupils, paraxial design and MTF.
- Hands-on sequential design in Zemax: lens data editor, merit functions, optimisation and tolerancing.
- Working knowledge of a CAD tool such as Fusion 360 or SolidWorks.
- Clear written documentation of your design choices and results.
Good to have
- Non-sequential and illumination design, including stray-light analysis.
- Knowledge of ophthalmic optics, schematic eye models (such as Liou-Brennan or Navarro) or fundus imaging.
- Experience with smartphone camera modules or compact imaging systems.
- 3D printing and hands-on optical bench work.
- Python or MATLAB for analysis, or Zemax automation through ZOS-API.
- Familiarity with medical device standards such as ISO 13485 and ISO 15004-2.
What you will gain
- Optics you design go into a real medical device on its way to regulatory submission.
- Work directly with the founders, from simulation through to a working prototype.
- An internship certificate and a letter of recommendation, with [a possible full time offer] for strong performers.
