Are you ready to make a difference?
Job Summary The Observability Engineer (Datadog) plays a central role in consolidating a fragmented monitoring estate onto Datadog as our single observability platform and migrating application performance monitoring off AppDynamics.
This role does the engineering that makes that real: instrumenting services, standing up integrations, and building the monitors, dashboards, and service level objectives that teams actually use during an incident.
The work has two phases and you will do both: migration, moving instrumentation and coverage onto Datadog service by service and retiring what it replaces; and platform operations, running Datadog well, keeping the signal clean, controlling what we ingest, and enabling other teams to self-serve.
Our outcome measure is business impact minutes: everything this team builds is judged on whether it helps us detect a problem before a customer does and diagnose it faster once we are on the call. This is a hands-on engineering role, not a monitoring or command center role.
- Ability to work on‑site in Bengaluru, India is a requirement of the role. *
Mode of Working: This role follows a hybrid work model, with a primary base in Bengaluru. While on‑site presence is essential for key engagements, flexibility is offered for remote work based on business needs and team alignment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy and operate the Datadog agent across a heterogeneous estate spanning Linux, Windows, virtual machines, and Azure Kubernetes Service, using repeatable, automated deployment patterns rather than manual configuration.
- Build and maintain integrations across cloud services, databases, middleware, messaging, and job scheduling, including custom and API-based collectors, and migrate APM instrumentation from AppDynamics to Datadog service by service, validating parity before decommissioning the source.
- Build monitors, dashboards, and service level objectives that are usable under pressure, with error budgets defined alongside them, and continuously improve signal quality by tuning, consolidating, and retiring alerts so that every alert is actionable and attributable to an owner.
- Maintain the ServiceNow integration that turns monitor events into incidents,
including priority mapping, deduplication, and closure behavior, and automate the platform by managing monitors, dashboards, and configuration as code through Terraform and the Datadog API.
- Watch what we ingest by understanding the cost consequence of log volume, indexed spans, and custom metric cardinality, and enable other teams by writing the documentation and standards that let application teams instrument their own services correctly.
Education Skills and Background You’ll Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field is required.
Experience
- Roughly 3 to 6 years in observability, site reliability, infrastructure, or platform engineering.
- Hands-on Datadog experience in production — agent deployment at scale across mixed operating systems, custom and API-based integrations where no native one exists, APM instrumentation owned through a migration, and monitors and dashboards managed as code rather than clicked together in the UI. You should be able to explain a rollout you personally worked on and the decisions inside it.
- Applied competence in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Linux — comfortable in a containerized environment and able to reason about how instrumentation behaves inside it, including agent deployment as a DaemonSet, autodiscovery, and pod and container tagging. Scripting and automation in Python or equivalent.
- Judgment on telemetry cost and cardinality — able to reason about the cost consequence of log volume, indexed spans, and custom metric cardinality, and to catch an unbounded tag or a chatty metric before it reaches the invoice.
- Troubleshooting instinct: you can tell the difference between a broken service and broken instrumentation, and you check the second before escalating the first.
- Clear written communication in English, including documentation another engineer can follow without you in the room.
- Services migrated off AppDynamics onto Datadog APM with validated parity, on the agreed sequence.
- Alert signal-to-noise measurably improved, with retired alerts documented rather than silently disabled.
- Proactive detection rising: more incidents found by a monitor than by a user.
- Platform configuration managed as code, reviewable, and reproducible.
- Application teams instrumenting their own services against your standards.
Preferred Experience
- Experience migrating from AppDynamics, Dynatrace, New Relic, or a similar platform onto Datadog.
- Infrastructure as code with Terraform, a directional goal for how we manage the platform.
- OpenTelemetry instrumentation experience.
- ServiceNow ITSM integration work in a production incident context.
- Experience in a large, regulated enterprise estate or a global capability center operating model.
Desirable Certifications
- Datadog Certifications (Observability, APM, Logs)
- SRE Foundation (DevOps Institute) or equivalent SRE fundamentals credential
- One cloud fundamentals certification (AZ‑900 preferred)
Key Behaviors of a Successful Candidate
- Adaptability: Adjusts quickly to evolving priorities and incident situations; remains calm, analytical, and collaborative under pressure.
- Independence: Takes ownership of decisions and technical troubleshooting, proactively identifying reliability risks before they become incidents.
- Willingness to Learn: Continuously grows technical competence in reliability engineering, automation, incident response, observability, and cloud‑native practices.
