NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking Head of Estates to provide strategic and professional leadership for operational estates across one of the largest and most diverse healthcare estates in Scotland.

Reporting directly to the Assistant Director (Estates), you will shape and lead the Operational Estates Strategy, ensuring it supports the Board’s clinical and property priorities. You will oversee safe, compliant and high-quality estates services; lead the development of the ten-year estate plan; and drive improvements in maintenance, sustainability, energy performance, value for money and workforce capability.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide strategic, technical and professional leadership for operational estates across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
- Develop and deliver the Operational Estates Strategy and ten-year estate development plan in alignment with Board and national priorities.
- Ensure robust statutory and mandatory compliance, effective governance and a strong estates health and safety culture.
- Lead operational maintenance, energy management, sustainability, carbon reduction and environmental programmes.
- Manage substantial workforce and financial resources, maintaining effective controls and delivering value for money.
- Develop a skilled, professional and proactive estates workforce through clear leadership, workforce planning, mentoring and development.
- Work closely with clinical, facilities, capital planning, procurement, property, asset management and PFI/Hub partners.
- Represent NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde at regional and national level, contributing to policy, strategy and best practice.

What We Are Looking For

- Chartered professional status (or working towards) in an engineering- or construction-related discipline.
- An accredited honours degree, supported by an appropriate master’s degree, master’s-level learning or an accredited MEng degree.

- A management qualification at HNC level or above.
- Significant experience at senior management level, with a strong record of achievement in a large and complex organisation; healthcare experience is desirable.
- Demonstrable experience of strategy development and implementation, change management, project management, financial control and workforce leadership.
- Excellent analytical, planning and IT skills, with the ability to interpret performance information and allocate resources effectively.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication, negotiation, influencing and relationship-management skills.
- The confidence, judgement and political awareness to operate with a high degree of autonomy at local, Board and national level.

This is a significant leadership opportunity within a complex, Board-wide directorate that supports healthcare delivery across hospitals, health centres, clinics and other facilities. You will influence the safety, condition, sustainability and future development of an estate of approximately 931,506 square metres, while leading services with around 400 whole-time-equivalent staff and substantial pay, supplies and utilities budgets. AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can be excellent for planning and preparing your application, but your answers must be your own.

- Show us the real you: Your application should reflect your skills, experience, and motivations authentically.
- Use AI wisely: It’s fine to use AI for ideas or to check spelling and grammar, but don’t let it write your answers.
- Why this matters: Applications that rely on AI-generated content may be withdrawn. By applying, you confirm your responses are based on your own knowledge and achievements.

Tip: Think of AI as a helper, not a substitute. We want to understand you, not an AI tool.
