Associate Principal Scientist / Principal Scientist Battery Materials
About the role. This role leads development of conductive additives, electrode slurries and cell prototypes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The scientist owns electrode formulation, pouch-cell build and electrochemical testing, and turns results into scalable processes. The two openings may split focus between cathode/anode slurry development and cell build and testing.
Key responsibilities
- Set the battery R&D; roadmap for CNT-based conductive additives and electrode slurries.
- Design and optimise cathode and anode slurries: binders, dispersants, surfactants, conductive additives, solids content and rheology.
- Lead lab-to-pilot electrode coating, calendaring, pouch-cell assembly and formation.
- Plan and interpret electrochemical tests: cycling, rate capability, EIS, cyclic voltammetry and impedance growth.
- Characterise materials and electrodes: rheology, particle size, adhesion, electrode resistivity, SEM and porosity.
- Diagnose degradation mechanisms and identify gains in energy density, cycle life, rate performance and thermal stability.
- Benchmark company's conductive additives against carbon black and competing CNT products.
- Work with engineering teams to transfer lab processes to pilot and manufacturing scale.
- Support customer sampling, cell-maker trials and technical data packages with Business Development.
- File invention disclosures and patents; maintain controlled formulation and test records.
- Lead and mentor the Assistant Scientist; enforce lab safety, including dry-room, lithium and electrolyte handling.
Qualifications & experience
- Ph.D. or Master's in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry or Materials Science.
- 810 years in lithium-ion battery R&D; (Principal Scientist typically 10+ years), with hands-on pouch-cell preparation and testing.
- Strong understanding of surfactant, dispersant, binder and polymer-formulation chemistry.
- Sound knowledge of Li-ion chemistry, degradation mechanisms and diagnostic data analysis.
- Experience leading projects and mentoring scientists.
Preferred
- Industrial experience in cell development or pilot-scale electrode processing.
- Experience with CNT or graphene conductive additives, silicon anodes, LFP or high-nickel cathodes.
- Patents or publications in battery materials.
Key skills
- Experimental design and electrochemical data analysis.
- Technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration.
- Transparent reporting to management and customers.
