An IQF (Individual Quick Freezing) Ammonia Operator in a frozen fruits and vegetables plant manages the specialized two-stage low-temperature ammonia ($NH_3$) refrigeration systems used to rapidly freeze produce (such as peas, berries, diced mangoes, corn, and broccoli) down to $-35^circtext{C}$ to $-40^circtext{C}$.
Because IQF operations involve continuous, high-capacity freezing alongside strict food hygiene standards, the operator plays a double role: managing industrial ammonia safety and ensuring food quality/thaw-frost control.
1. IQF Tunnel & Freezer Operations
- Temperature & Airflow Calibration: Maintain the IQF freezing tunnel operating parameters ($-35^circtext{C}$ to $-40^circtext{C}$). Adjust fan speeds and fluidization air pressure to ensure individual fruit and vegetable pieces float or move without clumping together.
- Defrost Cycles Management: IQF evaporators build up frost quickly due to high moisture levels from washed/blanched produce. Oversee sequential hot-gas defrosting or continuous water defrosts without disrupting production runs or causing thermal shock in the tunnel.
- Infeed / Outfeed Syncing: Coordinate ammonia liquid supply feeds with product conveyer belt speeds to match varying thermal loads (e.g., transitioning from high-moisture berries to dense root vegetables).
1. Ammonia Refrigeration System Monitoring
- Two-Stage System Management: Operates low-temperature booster compressors, high-stage screw/reciprocating compressors, surge drums, evaporative condensers, and liquid ammonia pumps.
- Parameter Tracking: Regularly record suction pressures, discharge pressures, oil differential pressures, intermediate temperatures,
and ammonia liquid levels in low-pressure receiver tanks.
- Oil Management: Drain oil from low-temperature ammonia accumulators/drain legs safely to prevent oil fouling on IQF evaporator coils (which drastically reduces freezing efficiency).
1. Food Safety, Hygiene & Sanitation (CIP Integration)
- Washing & Sanitation Interface: Work alongside hygiene teams during Clean-In-Place (CIP) or manual sanitation shifts. Ensure ammonia evaporator coils are isolated or protected during high-pressure washing.
- Preventing Food Contamination: Ensure no mechanical lubricants or ammonia micro-leaks contact the food-grade stainless steel conveyor belts, shaker trays, or raw produce zones.
- Post-Sanitation Pull-Down: Safely conduct system chill-downs/pull-downs after sanitation cycles without causing vacuum conditions or thermal stresses on coils and piping.
1. Safety, Compliance & Emergency Response
- Process Safety Management (PSM): Maintain strict adherence to PSM, EPA, OSHA, or regional chemical safety standards for hazardous anhydrous ammonia ($NH_3$).
- Leak Detection: Conduct routine checks on ammonia sensors, emergency exhaust ventilation, emergency shut-off valves, and relief valves near the freezing tunnels and engine room.
- Emergency HAZMAT Readiness:
Serve as a core member of the facility’s emergency response team, trained to wear Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to contain potential liquid or vapor leaks.
- Safety Permits: Execute Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Confined Space Entry permits for tunnel maintenance, and Line Break permits prior to opening refrigeration circuits.
1. Preventative Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform oil changes, shaft seal replacements, valve overhauls, filter replacements, and belt tension adjustments on compressors and IQF recirculating fans.
- Troubleshooting Performance Drops: Identify issues like coil icing, low ammonia liquid circulation, pressure spikes, or mechanical noise in compressor units before they stop production.
- Logistics & Storage Temperature Maintenance: Monitor ammonia supply to downstream packaging areas, cold storage hold rooms, and blast freezers kept at $-18^circtext{C}$ to $-25^circtext{C}$.
Typical Qualifications & Technical Requirements
- Certifications: RETA CARO (Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator) or CIRO (Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator), or equivalent local industrial refrigeration license.
- Experience: 2–5+ years in low-temperature industrial ammonia refrigeration, preferably within food processing, dairy, or produce freezing plants.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in SCADA/PLC controls, mechanical maintenance, reading P&IDs; (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams), and operating respiratory protection (SCBA).
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹30,000.00 per month
Work Location: In person
