QA Senior Engineer, Functional & Automation Lead

Deloitte Consulting LLP | IDT

About the Role The QA Senior Engineer, Functional & Automation Lead owns test strategy, planning, and execution across Deloitte's IDT product portfolio, leading manual testing efforts while driving the shift toward greater automation and GenAI-enabled QA practices, and mentoring the QA engineers around them.

Innovations Delivery Transformation (IDT) is the organization within Deloitte Consulting Services that builds a culture of continuous innovation, driving profitable revenue through the identification and incubation of breakthrough, IP-asset-based businesses and markets. As Deloitte's leading-edge product development center, IDT builds cloud-based software and advanced analytics products — spanning wearables, machine learning, social/mobile, and other emerging technologies — bringing together UX/UI designers, architects, engineers, infrastructure and operations staff, testers, and developers, all following rigorous software quality assurance methods and standards.

Key Responsibilities

Test Strategy & Planning

- Own the preparation and documentation of test artifacts, including Test Plans, Test Strategy, Test Cases, and sign-off reports
- Design and drive comprehensive testing strategies for new features, enhancements, and bug fixes across full software release cycles

Test Execution

- Lead and execute all core manual testing phases: functional testing, regression, end-to-end, exploratory, API, smoke, sanity, risk-based, and ad hoc test cycles
- Ensure thorough test coverage by developing and managing detailed test cases and scenarios for positive, negative, and edge cases
- Oversee test execution, defect logging, and tracking to closure, ensuring high-quality deliverables using tools like Jira, Azure DevOps (ADO), or similar

QA Process Leadership & Innovation

- Champion Agile QA processes, actively participating in sprint planning, story reviews, retrospectives, and daily Scrum ceremonies
- Leverage Jira, ADO, or comparable tools for test management, user story traceability, defect tracking, and reporting
- Drive quality initiatives across Scrum teams and collaborate with developers, BAs, and business stakeholders
- Mentor and guide junior team members, fostering growth in QA best practices and innovation
- Proactively identify manual processes suitable for automation; lead, promote, and implement strategies to increase test automation coverage over time
- Advocate for and accelerate GenAI adoption in QA — evaluate, introduce, and enable the use of AI-powered tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot or equivalents) for test script automation, exploratory testing support, or intelligent defect triage
- Collaborate to continuously evolve automation and AI/ML practices within the QA function, ensuring the team stays ahead of the curve

Quality Enablement & Risk Management

- Contribute to non-functional QA initiatives (performance, security, accessibility) and integrate AI/automation approaches where appropriate
- Proactively identify, communicate, and mitigate QA risks and quality gaps

Stakeholder Collaboration

- Interact and coordinate with cross-functional teams to clarify acceptance criteria, engage in defect triages, and prioritize business-critical issues
- Present test results, technology advancements, risks, and business impact clearly to product management and engineering leaders

Reporting Relationships

Reports to a QA Manager or Engineering Manager within IDT. Leads and mentors QA engineers, and collaborates with developers, BAs, product management, and engineering leaders across Agile teams.

Qualifications

Required

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- 6-9 years of professional experience in software testing/QA, with deep expertise in manual testing methodology and processes
- Hands-on experience using Jira, Azure DevOps (ADO), or similar test management and defect tracking tools
- Strong track record in creating, executing, and maintaining test artifacts
- Demonstrated understanding of SDLC, Agile methods, and Agile operational ceremonies
- Experience in multiple testing types: functional, regression, exploratory, API, smoke, sanity, risk-based, and end-to-end testing
- Proactive in identifying and leading test automation opportunities, working closely with automation engineers or upskilling in frameworks such as Selenium, Playwright, Java, Python, or similar
- Awareness of GenAI trends in QA, with experience utilizing and/or advocating AI-powered tools such as GitHub Copilot, OpenAI, or equivalents to improve efficiency, accuracy, and test coverage
- Hands-on experience with API testing tools (such as Postman, Swagger, or REST-assured)
- Excellent analytical, leadership, and communication skills with a passion for innovation and mentoring

Preferred

- Hands-on experience building or maintaining automation frameworks
- Direct exposure to performance, security, or accessibility testing tools
- Experience championing new tooling or methods (automation or AI) within project teams
