A Chief Engineer is responsible for managing technical operations, supervising engineering teams, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, controlling maintenance costs, and maintaining the reliability of equipment and systems.

Responsibilities vary by industry, such as marine, hotel, manufacturing, construction, or facility management.

Key Responsibilities of a Chief Engineer1.

Technical

Operations and ManagementOversee all engineering operations and technical activities.

Ensure the productive and reliable operation of machinery, equipment, and systems.

Develop and implement maintenance schedules and operating procedures.

Monitor equipment performance and troubleshoot technical problems.

Ensure minimum downtime and maximum operational efficiency.

- Maintenance and RepairsPlan and supervise preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance.

Diagnose equipment failures and coordinate repair activities.

Ensure timely servicing, inspection, and replacement of equipment.

Maintain maintenance records, technical logs, and reports.

Coordinate with external contractors and service providers.

- Team Leadership and SupervisionLead, train, and supervise engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel.

Assign duties, establish work priorities, and monitor performance.

Conduct technical training and safety briefings.

Ensure proper coordination between engineering and other departments.

Evaluate staff performance and support career development.

- Safety and Regulatory ComplianceEnsure compliance with applicable safety standards, laws, and regulations.





Implement safe working practices and risk assessment procedures.

Conduct safety inspections and ensure corrective actions are completed.

Investigate technical incidents, equipment failures, and accidents.

Maintain permits, inspection certificates, and statutory documentation.

Control expenditure on spare parts, tools, fuel, energy, and repairs.

Identify opportunities to reduce operating costs.

Approve maintenance purchases within delegated authority.

Monitor inventory and ensure the availability of critical spare parts.
