Position: Part time Chinese–English Technical Engineering Translator & Interpreter

Role Overview

We are looking for a Mandarin Chinese–English Technical Translator & Interpreter to support our engineering and project teams in communication with Chinese equipment manufacturers, engineering companies, suppliers, and technical representatives. The candidate will be responsible for accurate two-way translation and interpretation of engineering, technical, commercial, and project-related information between Chinese and English.

This is not a general language translation role. The candidate should have the ability to understand engineering terminology, equipment specifications, technical drawings, datasheets, fabrication details, supplier quotations, manuals, and engineering discussions and communicate the technical intent accurately in English and Mandarin.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Document Translation

- Translate technical and engineering documents from Chinese → English and English → Chinese.
- Translate and review engineering drawings and drawing notes.
- Translate equipment datasheets, specifications, technical specifications and vendor documents.
- Translate PFDs, P&IDs; and process-related documentation.
- Translate mechanical, fabrication, GA and assembly drawings.
- Translate BOMs, MTOs, ITPs, FAT/SAT documentation and inspection reports.
- Translate operation and maintenance manuals, installation and commissioning procedures.
- Translate vendor quotations, technical offers, technical reports and test reports.
- Translate technical correspondence, emails, meeting minutes and action trackers.

2. Engineering Meeting Interpretation

- Provide Chinese ↔ English interpretation during engineering and technical meetings.
- Support vendor meetings, design reviews, FAT/SAT, equipment inspection, manufacturing, installation and commissioning discussions.
- Accurately communicate technical discussions without losing the original engineering intent.





3. Engineering & Vendor Communication

- Act as the communication bridge between English-speaking engineering/project teams and Chinese-speaking suppliers/manufacturers.
- Communicate technical queries, comments, clarifications and revisions to Chinese vendors.
- Translate vendor responses and ensure the engineering team clearly understands the response.
- Follow up with vendors on pending technical clarifications and documentation.

4. Engineering Drawing & Specification Support

- Review Chinese annotations, notes, labels and technical terminology appearing on engineering drawings.
- Translate drawing comments and technical requirements accurately.
- Assist engineers in understanding Chinese engineering documentation.
- Maintain consistency of terminology across drawings, specifications and project documents.

5. Procurement & Commercial Support

- Translate Chinese supplier quotations, commercial offers and technical proposals.
- Support comparison of technical offers from Chinese vendors.
- Translate commercial and technical correspondence related to equipment, piping, instrumentation, mechanical components, electrical items, utilities, fabrication, delivery and installation.

6. Site / Manufacturing Support

- Provide on-site interpretation during equipment fabrication, inspection, testing, installation and commissioning, when required.
- Support communication between Chinese technicians/engineers and the project team.
- Translate verbal instructions and technical explanations during troubleshooting activities.

7. Translation Quality & Documentation

- Ensure translations are technically accurate, complete and consistent.




- Maintain a project-specific Chinese–English technical terminology/glossary.
- Cross-check translated documents against the original document.
- Highlight unclear, ambiguous or technically inconsistent information instead of making assumptions.
- Maintain proper version control of translated documents.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree/diploma in Engineering, Technical Translation, Chinese Language, Linguistics, or a related field.
- Fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English, both written and spoken.
- Proven experience in Chinese ↔ English technical translation and interpretation.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in an engineering, manufacturing, EPC, industrial equipment, pharmaceutical, chemical, machinery or similar environment.
- Strong understanding of engineering terminology and technical documentation.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Good proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

- Engineering background, particularly Mechanical / Chemical / Process Engineering.
- Experience working with Chinese equipment manufacturers.
- Experience in EPC / EPCM / industrial projects.
- Experience with pharmaceutical, chemical, process or manufacturing equipment.
- Experience translating P&IDs;, equipment drawings, datasheets and technical specifications.
- Experience supporting FAT, SAT, commissioning or site installation.
- Experience working with international engineering teams.
- Familiarity with Chinese engineering standards and terminology.
