About the role
The Ken has spent 10 years reporting stories that explain how Indian business actually works, and a lot of that reporting stays true long after the day or week it was published. A story from 2022 often explains this morning’s headline better than anything written today. Your role is at the intersection of the popular business zeitgeist, reader interest, and The Ken’s extensive body of work. One sharp take a day, built on or connected to our archive, with your own point of view. It will be one of the newsroom’s front doors to the people who don’t read us yet.
What you will do
Read the room every morning. Track what founders, investors, operators, and policymakers are arguing about: Linkedin, X, earnings calls, filings, policy announcements, the morning papers. Shortlist three or four possible hooks. Find The Ken angle. For each hook, ask where The Ken has reported something that changes, deepens, or contradicts the popular reading. Go and find it. Picking the one that becomes the day’s take is the real editorial decision of your day.
Write the take. One a day, on a easy structure: what people are saying, what The Ken reported, why it matters now. Have a point of view. Summarising an old story is not the job. Make the point in 200 or 800 words, whichever it needs. A longer weekly piece when a theme deserves it.
Check before you reuse. Numbers, valuations, people and facts change. Update them against the present and check with the original reporter where it matters.
Credit every time. Link to the original story, name the reporter, and write so that interested readers also want the original reporting.
Write in more than one shape. The same take may run as a newsletter item,
an on-site section, a corporate briefing and the base for a social post.
Become the archive’s memory. Over time, be the person who knows what we’ve written about almost anything, and help improve how the archive is tagged and searched so the next person can too.
What we are looking for
2 to 4 years in journalism, newsletters, research, analysis, or a writing-heavy role in business, policy, or tech. We care more about what you’ve written and what happened to it than where you worked. You will do well here if:
– You read business news for fun and have opinions about it that you can defend with evidence.
– You write clearly and fast, and you can make one point in 200 words without padding or in 800 without drifting.
– You can take a hard edit. The distance between a first draft and a published piece here is large, and the people who thrive find that interesting rather than humiliating.
– You’re comfortable being publicly wrong now and then, and you correct yourself in the open, gracefully.
– You care about credit, accuracy, and fairness more than about being first.
– You can persuade reporters to help you without the authority to compel them.
– You read numbers: you want to know which takes travelled and which sent people to the archive, and you change what you do because of it.
– Bonus: you’ve built an audience of your own (a newsletter, LinkedIn, X) and understand why some posts travel and others don’t.
What you get
A daily platform with The Ken’s name behind it and 10 years of reporting under you. A byline that becomes the one people look for when something happens. Direct, daily editing from people who have set the standard for business journalism in India, which is the fastest way to get better that we know of. And an archive most writers would pay to have access to, which you’ll know better than anyone. Have questions?
