Job Purpose To plan, manage and continuously improve the manufacturing operations for CT/PT transformers in a high-MTO (Make-to-Order) environment , ensuring that customer orders are manufactured on time, as per approved drawings/specifications, within planned cost, and with the required quality standards .
The Production Manager will be responsible for converting the production plan into daily execution while effectively managing capacity, manpower, machines, materials, WIP, production priorities, quality, testing, and delivery commitments .
The role requires solid coordination with Planning, Engineering, Purchase, Stores, Quality, Testing, Maintenance and Dispatch to ensure smooth order-to-delivery flow.
Key Responsibilities
A. Production Planning & Execution
- Convert the monthly/weekly production plan into a detailed daily and shift-wise production schedule .
- Ensure production is executed according to customer priority, promised delivery date and manufacturing lead time .
- Monitor production against plan on a daily basis.
- Identify bottlenecks and take corrective action to recover delayed orders.
- Ensure proper sequencing of MTO jobs to minimize changeover, waiting time and WIP.
- Ensure timely release of jobs to the shop floor only when required drawings, BOMs, materials and specifications are available.
- Coordinate with Planning and Engineering for changes in priorities, drawings and customer requirements.
- Monitor standard hours vs. actual hours for different products/jobs.
- Maintain production continuity through effective manpower and machine allocation.
B. MTO Production Management
- Establish effective production control for customized CT/PT products.
- Closely monitor each order through major manufacturing stages.
- Track order-wise WIP ageing and identify jobs exceeding planned cycle time.
- Ensure no order remains unnecessarily stuck between processes.
- Develop and maintain order-wise production status/MIS .
- Escalate material, drawing, engineering,
quality or testing issues that may affect delivery.
- Ensure effective coordination between different production processes to maintain smooth flow.
C. Capacity & Manpower Management
- Prepare manpower requirements based on the production load and product mix.
- Allocate manpower according to skill requirements and production priorities.
- Monitor manpower productivity and overtime.
- Develop multi-skilled operators to improve flexibility in the MTO environment.
- Identify manpower bottlenecks and initiate corrective action.
- Optimize utilization of critical machines and workstations.
D. Quality Management
- Ensure products are manufactured strictly according to approved drawings, BOMs, process specifications and customer requirements.
- Drive First Pass Yield (FPY) improvement.
- Reduce rework, rejection and process defects.
- Work closely with Quality and Testing teams to identify root causes of failures.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions for recurring defects.
- Conduct daily/weekly review of production-related quality issues.
- Ensure proper process controls and inspection checkpoints are followed.
E. WIP & Lead-Time Management
- Monitor WIP at every major manufacturing stage.
- Establish maximum permissible WIP ageing for each process.
- Identify bottleneck operations and improve throughput.
- Reduce unnecessary movement, waiting and queue time.
- Monitor actual production lead time against planned lead time.
- Ensure urgent/customer-critical orders receive appropriate priority without disturbing overall production flow.
F. Material Coordination
- Coordinate with Stores,
Purchase and Planning to ensure timely availability of production materials.
- Identify material shortages that can affect production schedules.
- Ensure effective material utilization and minimize material wastage.
- Ensure material traceability for critical components and processes.
- Ensure production does not proceed with incorrect, unapproved or obsolete materials.
G. Machine & Maintenance Coordination
- Ensure availability and proper utilization of production machinery and equipment.
- Coordinate with Maintenance for preventive and breakdown maintenance.
- Monitor machine downtime and its impact on production.
- Identify critical equipment and develop contingency plans.
- Ensure measuring and production equipment are available and fit for use.
H. Process Improvement
- Drive continuous improvement in productivity, quality and lead time.
- Implement Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen and visual management practices where applicable.
- Identify bottlenecks and eliminate non-value-added activities.
- Improve line balancing and workstation utilization.
- Standardize production processes and best practices.
- Reduce overtime, rework, waiting time and production losses.
I. Safety & Discipline
- Ensure compliance with plant safety rules and statutory requirements.
- Promote safe working practices throughout the production area.
- Ensure proper use of PPE.
- Maintain workplace discipline, housekeeping and 5S.
- Immediately address unsafe conditions and unsafe working practices.
- Ensure production targets are never achieved at the expense of safety.
J. MIS & Management Reporting Prepare and review daily/weekly/monthly production reports covering:
- Production Plan vs Actual
- Schedule Adherence
- OTIF status
- Production Lead Time
- WIP Ageing
- Machine Utilization
- Manpower Productivity
- Standard Hours vs Actual Hours
- Rejection & Rework
- FPY
- Downtime
- Overtime
