Full Stack Engineer – Java Backend (FTE)

About TANUH

TANUH (Translational AI for Networked Universal Healthcare) is an IISc-anchored Section 8 Company on a mission to ensure that frontline healthcare delivery workers have access to AI and digital technologies that work to support them and combat NCDs. We are funded by the Ministry of Education and google.org and function as an AI Centre of Excellence

Role Overview

As a Full Stack Engineer with a strong Java backend focus, you will own end-to-end product features with primary responsibility for our Java-based backend services, alongside supporting NodeJS services, Python-based AI services, and modern web applications. You will turn clinical workflows and AI model outputs into reliable, secure, and scalable services and clean, well-documented APIs consumed by our web dashboards, Android app, and partner systems - and contribute to intuitive web experiences for clinicians, program officers, and administrators.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who is deeply comfortable designing and shipping production-grade Java (Spring Boot) services, building scalable APIs and data pipelines on cloud, and collaborating with data scientists to deploy ML models responsibly under India's evolving healthcare and data protection regulations. Working experience with NodeJS and React / TypeScript will let you contribute across the stack where needed. You will partner closely with Mobile Application developers to define and deliver API contracts and data flows.

Key Responsibilities

Backend & APIs (Java-first)

- Design, build, and operate scalable, high-availability backend services primarily in Java (Spring Boot), with supporting services in NodeJS, that serve web dashboards, the companion Android app, and partner integrations.
- Productionise AI/ML models developed by the data science team - building inference service integrations, feature pipelines, model versioning, and monitoring for drift, bias, and clinical performance across diverse Indian sub-populations.
- Architect data pipelines (batch and streaming) for ingesting forms, screening results, lab values, prescriptions, and longitudinal patient records, with appropriate de-identification and consent management.

- Build necessary compliant integrations and integrate with national and state systems where required.
- Define and version transparent, well-documented REST/GraphQL contracts used by both the web app and the Android client; collaborate with the mobile team on offline-sync, conflict resolution, and pagination semantics.

Web Front-end (Secondary)

- Contribute to React / TypeScript web dashboards - building features, integrating them with backend APIs, and ensuring accessible, responsive user experiences.
- Work with designers and front-end engineers to shape API-driven UI requirements, performance, and usability.

System Design & DevOps

- Own architecture decisions across services: API design, data modelling, caching, message queues, and event-driven workflows.
- Own the performance, reliability, and scalability of JVM-based services - profiling, tuning, and capacity planning.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform / Pulumi), container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), and observability (logs, metrics, traces).
- Implement data residency, encryption-at-rest and in-transit, audit logging, vulnerability management, and CERT-In incident reporting practices.
- Drive engineering practices around code quality, testing (unit, integration, end-to-end with Playwright / Cypress), threat modelling, and incident response.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Partner closely with Product Managers, public health experts, data scientists, designers, the Android team, and program teams to translate requirements and field realities into well-engineered software.
- Contribute to product discovery: prototype rapidly, run usability testing with clinicians and program officers, and iterate based on field feedback from PHCs, HWCs, district offices, and state programs.
- Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and help shape engineering culture in a small, mission-driven team.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related engineering discipline from a recognised university (B.E./B.Tech/M.Tech/MCA or equivalent). Strong demonstrable experience may substitute for formal qualifications.

• Experience: 8-12 years of professional software engineering experience, the majority of it in backend development with Java.

• Backend - Java (Primary): Expert-level Java (Java 17+) with deep hands-on experience in Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Data JPA / Hibernate, Spring Security), building high-scale, distributed microservices. Strong understanding of REST design, authentication (OAuth2 / JWT), concurrency and asynchronous programming, messaging (Kafka / RabbitMQ), and JVM performance tuning.

• Backend - NodeJS (Secondary): Working experience building and maintaining services in NodeJS (Express / NestJS) with TypeScript.

• Frontend (Secondary): Working proficiency in JavaScript / TypeScript and React; familiarity with Next.js (or a comparable framework), state management (Redux / Zustand / TanStack Query), component libraries, HTML, CSS / Tailwind, and accessibility.

• Databases: Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL / MySQL) and at least one NoSQL or time-series store (MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB).

• Cloud & DevOps: Working knowledge of at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure) - preferably with experience deploying in Indian cloud regions - along with Docker and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar).

• Engineering Fundamentals: Strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, system design, version control (Git), and modern software engineering practices including testing (JUnit / Mockito) and code review.

• Ownership: Demonstrated ability to take a feature from ambiguous problem statement to production, including measuring impact post-launch.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience integrating with Python-based ML services or working closely with data science teams.
- Open-source contributions, technical writing, or community engagement in the Indian healthtech / public health / AI ecosystem.
