About Fortify Health

Fortify Health has a vision for a healthier world where everyone has the micronutrients they need to survive and thrive. We work toward this by enabling access to micronutrient-rich wheat flour to reduce and prevent iron deficiency anaemia. We currently work in many regions across India but are planning to expand to new regions in the coming years.

Fortify Health operates through three work streams:

- Open Market Support: We support millers to cost-neutrally fortify chakki atta in the open market. Details of the regions we operate in and our beneficiaries can be found here.
- Government Partnership Support: We work with governments in India to mainstream wheat flour fortification through social safety net programs
- Evidence Generation: We conduct monitoring and evaluation of activities to inform the public about the value of food fortification

How we work

We take a data driven approach to our work, heavily focusing on how we can have the most impact possible with the resources we have. This forms a core part of our organisational ethos.

At Fortify

Health, we value each of our team members and support their career development. This commitment to our team's growth and wellbeing extends to fostering strong interpersonal connections, which we prioritise despite our distributed workforce. Since we are a remote organisation, our HR team organise regular online socials in addition to an annual full team retreat to build team cohesion.

About the role

Strong finance operations let our programme teams pay partners on time, report accurately to funders and stay compliant. That work directly supports our mission to reduce iron deficiency anaemia.

Our finance team’s workload has grown faster than its capacity. As Finance Officer, you will take on high-volume, rules-based finance work for six months, so the team can focus on review, reporting and planning. Over the same period, we are rolling out new finance systems and automations, and you will help us test them and put them into everyday use.

About 60% of your time will go to vendor payments work and about 40% to finance operations support,

mainly travel expenses and data entry.

- Reports to: Finance Manager
- Works closely with: our Finance Officer, who approves payments and handles exceptions, and the team members leading our systems and automation work

Responsibilities and activities The Finance Officer will be responsible for the following:

- Vendor Payments & Invoice Processing

◦ Ensure timely processing of vendor payments by maintaining an up-to-date payment tracker.

◦ Check invoices and supporting documents before payment, including amounts, approvals, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Tax Deducted at Source (TDS).

◦ Prepare payments for approval and escalate exceptions to the Finance Officer.

◦ Act as the first point of contact for vendor inquiries related to invoicing and payments.

◦ Maintain organised documentation and financial records for all vendors and consultants.

- Travel & Expense Management

◦ Review and validate travel reimbursement, advance and settlement forms to ensure policy adherence.

◦ Process approved travel claims on time.

◦ Work closely with internal teams to resolve travel and expense-related queries.

- Financial Records & Reconciliation

◦ Update financial trackers to monitor payments, expenses and budget utilisation.

◦ Support monthly reconciliations of payments and vendor balances.

◦ Support the preparation of documents for internal and external audits.

- Systems & Process Support

◦ Use and test new finance systems and automations as they are rolled out, and flag issues to the Finance Manager.

◦ Document routine finance processes as simple standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Please note that this is a guide to the work you will initially be required to undertake, but does not cover all of the duties the post holder may have to perform. Responsibilities will evolve over time,

in discussion with the Finance Manager.

What success looks like

- In your first month: you learn our policies, trackers and approval flow, and take over vendor payments and travel claims with close support.
- By month three: you run payments, invoice checks and travel claims on your own, escalating only exceptions. We hold a mid-point check-in on the scope of the role.
- By month six: your routine processes are documented as SOPs and ready to hand over, ahead of the month-six review.

Throughout the contract, we will look at:
- payment turnaround time and error rate
- travel claims processed on time and in line with policy
- vendor queries resolved without escalation
- payment and finance trackers kept up to date

Candidate profileRequirements

- Fluency in Hindi and professional proficiency in English
- Expertise:

◦ Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, or a related field.

◦ Hands-on experience with vendor payments, invoice processing, or expense reimbursements; working knowledge of GST and TDS on vendor invoices; good skills in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets

- Execution: robust attention to detail and documentation, and the ability to handle a high volume of routine work accurately and on time
- Quick start: able to join at short notice and get up to speed within the first month
- Collaboration: works well within a team and with external vendors
- Communication: clear, concise written and verbal communication
- Problem-solving: spots errors and gaps early and suggests fixes
- Growth mindset: open to new systems and tools, and learns from setbacks

Desirable attributes

- One to three years of experience in accounts payable, finance operations or non-profit operations in India
- Experience with accounting software or finance automation tools
- Experience working remotely and independently
- Enthusiasm for our mission to improve people’s lives through better nutrition
