The role requires hands-on expertise in Autodesk Alias and Class-A surfacing, a strong understanding of automotive design development processes, and the ability to collaborate closely with design, engineering, packaging, tooling, and manufacturing teams.
The successful candidate should have a strong appreciation for automotive aesthetics, surface continuity, proportion, reflections, and form development, along with the technical discipline to deliver manufacturable surfaces for production vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
1. Class-A Surfacing & Digital Sculpting
- Develop high-quality Class-A surfaces for automotive exterior, interior, and component applications.
- Translate styling sketches, concept designs, reference images, and digital clay models into accurate 3D surface geometry.
- Maintain surface continuity, curvature consistency, highlight flow, and reflection quality across adjoining surfaces.
- Identify and resolve surface imperfections, including waviness, curvature inconsistencies, and unwanted reflections.
- Apply advanced surfacing techniques to develop complex freeform geometries while preserving design intent.
2. Design Development & Styling Integration
- Collaborate with automotive designers and design leads to interpret styling themes, proportions, and aesthetic requirements.
- Convert conceptual design intent into technically feasible and visually accurate digital models.
- Participate in design reviews, surface evaluations, and iterative refinement exercises.
- Incorporate feedback from design and engineering teams while maintaining styling integrity.
- Support alternative surface proposals and rapid modelling iterations during concept development.
3. Engineering Integration & Production Readiness
- Support automotive product development from concept modelling through design freeze and production release.
- Develop surfaces considering packaging, component interfaces, dimensional requirements, tooling feasibility, and manufacturing constraints.
- Coordinate with engineering teams on fitment, parting lines, draft requirements, panel gaps, flushness, and assembly interfaces, wherever applicable.
- Facilitate the transition from styling surfaces to downstream engineering CAD models.
- Incorporate inputs from prototype, tooling, and manufacturing teams to improve technical feasibility and production readiness.
4. Advanced Modelling & Digital Workflows
- Apply advanced automotive surfacing and digital sculpting techniques to develop complex forms and component geometries.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of Subdivision Surface (Sub-D) modelling for conceptual design and form exploration.
- Utilise complementary tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper, Blender, and relevant visualisation software, where applicable.
- Maintain clean, structured, editable digital models suitable for design collaboration and downstream engineering use.
- Identify opportunities to improve modelling efficiency, surface quality, and digital product development workflows.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Quality
- Work closely with styling, product design, mechanical engineering, packaging, CAE, tooling, and manufacturing teams.
- Participate in technical reviews and resolve surface-related design challenges.
- Ensure accuracy, data integrity, and adherence to modelling standards, file-management protocols, and project milestones.
- Evaluate model quality and downstream usability before submitting deliverables.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in digital modelling practices and design development processes.
Educational Qualifications
Candidates should possess one or more of the following qualifications from a reputed design institute, engineering college, or recognised technical institution:
- B.Des. / M.Des. in Transportation Design, Automotive Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related discipline.
- B.E. / B.Tech. / M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a relevant engineering specialisation.
- Postgraduate qualification or specialised certification in Digital Modelling, Automotive Surfacing, Transportation Design, or Advanced CAD Modelling.
A strong portfolio demonstrating hands-on automotive Class-A surfacing expertise will be a key consideration. Experience & Industry Background
Candidates with relevant experience in the following environments will be preferred:
- Automotive OEM design studios and product development centres.
- Electric vehicle manufacturers and mobility technology start-ups.
- Automotive and transportation design consultancies.
- Independent automotive design studios and advanced product development organisations in India or internationally.
- Automotive styling, digital surfacing, and concept-to-production development programmes.
Experience working on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, or other automotive mobility platforms will be an advantage. Exposure to both concept-stage design development and production-intent vehicle programmes will be particularly valuable.
