Position: Engineer - SAP Linux

Position Summary:

- Engineers have deep knowledge and hands-on experience in enterprise-wide platforms and solve technical problems while working on technology initiatives. Engineers have strong architectural, leadership, and technical skills. They ensure delivery of high-quality artifacts, and adhere to and follow Costco’s SDLC. Engineers interact in a highly effective manner with other team members and management, drive innovation, and influence delivery and performance.
- This SAP Linux Systems Engineer designs, builds, and maintains the Red Hat/Suse Linux US and International environments. The Engineer oversees planning of the integration of licensed and/or OEM software packages, as well as all strategic and tactical planning of the environment required to meet Costco-specific business needs. The Engineer filling this role will also be expected to deliver excellent customer service and to interact in a highly effective manner with other team members and management. The ideal candidate must be accomplished in areas of analysis, design, installation, implementation, configuration, tuning, operations and security of RedHat systems. Costco is looking for a creative individual who can effectively manage projects and multiple tasks to meet business objectives.

Job Duties/Essential Functions:

- Automates, documents, shares, educates, delegates, and improves processes.

- Runs proof of concepts and uses diagnostic/debugging skills to solve current challenges in multi-platform systems.

- Promotes and supports a culture of compliance, risk avoidance/mitigation, and corporate accountability throughout the organization through technical leadership, knowledge of business need, development and communication of policies, procedures, and plans, and assurance of solution designs that are in compliance with architecture standards, technology guardrails, security, and operational guidelines.
- Provides leadership/mentoring to team members, implements development efficiencies, creates appropriate. documentation, drives operational efficiencies and technical growth within the team, and supports the release model.
- Optimizes team efficiency and performance through high level technical direction.
- Provides technical leadership in implementation of applications, strategic planning sessions, documentation of requirements, tool implementation, database query languages, and programming languages.
- Uses subject matter expertise to support industry standard source control and source change management techniques.
- Presents technical designs and solutions to executives, management, and other audiences to gain consensus and/or project approval.
- Develops enterprise-class Red Hat solutions that support the enterprise SAP Landscape in US and International.
- Develops and enhances automated processes to minimize downtime, improve performance, and the security of the system architectures.
- Develops and designs tool sets that simplify provisioning and support on premises and on Azure.
- Acts as a senior escalation point for complex issues. Ensures timely recovery from outages, performs root cause analysis, and implements preventative measures.

Solution Planning:

- Works with vendors, business and application development teams, and other technical teams to meet the needs of the project.
- Works with Solution Architects and SAP Basis Engineers to develop, implement and support new capabilities and designs.
- Analyzes technical risks and advises on risk mitigation strategies.
- Works with the Solution Architects and Project Managers to develop a high-level project schedule, resource plan for the project, and project costs.

Solution Delivery:

- Implements and maintains enterprise class Linux solutions that support SAP systems.
- Designs and implements a toolset that simplifies provisioning and support of a large enterprise environment.
- Plans and executes major platform software and operating system upgrades and maintenance across a highly virtualized environment.
- Takes responsibility for the technical content (architecture and design), integrity and quality of solution.
- Takes accountability for the delivery of the solution as specified (by requirements and architecture).
- Analyzes available assets (frameworks, reference architectures, etc.) to bridge the gap between the as-is architecture and the to-be architecture.
- Practices adherence to IT standards.
- Collaborates and partners with SAP Application teams to create a continuous integration pipeline focused on automation.
- Collaborates and partners with SAP Application and Database administrators to standardize and automate deployments.
- Plans and executes major platform software and operating system upgrades and maintenance across a highly virtualized environment.
- Collaborates with SAP Release Management team, manages the planning, implementation,



and upgrade of OEM packages.
- Manages system resources to assure maximum system performance and appropriate additional capacity for peak periods and growth.
- Plans, configures, and implements features on the Red Hat platforms that improve availability, response time, and monitoring of key system metrics.
- Collaborates with the Enterprise Linux team to design and review decision documents.
- Manages daily activities of configuration and operation of SAP IT systems.
- Provides in-depth experience in troubleshooting SAP IT systems.
- Takes part of the on-call support rotation and provides support to the user community using incident and problem management tools, email, and voicemail.
- Maintain automated processes and workflows.
- Performs root cause analysis on Incidents and Problems.

Required:

- Advanced knowledge of Linux system administration.
- Excellent knowledge of Linux methods.
- IT experience and Red Hat Linux experience in an enterprise environment.
- Experience with a diverse range of orchestration suites and tools, including, but not limited to: Puppet Enterprise, HP Operations Orchestration, GitLab, GitHub, Terraform, Ansible.
- Demonstrated ability with programming and scripting languages including, but not limited to, Python, Powershell, and shell scripting.
- Experienced in working closely with development teams to define and optimize CI/CD pipeline processes.
- Proven ability to perform custom RPM builds.
- Strong Cloud experience in Azure.
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or SUSE certification or higher certification or equivalent engineering experience.
- Experience with Satellite, preferably 6.0 and newer.
- Experience developing and documenting standard operating procedures and best practices in a technical repository.
- Demonstrated ability in Systems Management and Administration (applying fixes, loading the OS, creating Gold images, resolving system issues, working with suppliers to resolve issues, etc).
- Strong scripting language expertise.
- Strong focus on design, build, deployment, security, system hardening, and securing services.
- Controls consistency and integrity monitoring and health checks of the operating system structure.
- Proven expertise in Performance Tuning and Capacity Planning.
- Understanding of Configuration Management and Change Management Best Practices.

- Available for periodic off-hours work, including weekends and holidays and be able to provide 24x7 on-call support as necessary.

Recommended:

- BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent formal training and experience.
- 8+ years’ IT experience and 6+ years’ Red Hat Linux experience in an enterprise environment.
- Experience with VMWare and virtualized environments.
- Working knowledge of Python, Puppet, and Ansible scripting language.
- Successful internal candidates will have spent one year or more on their current team.
