Job Title: Design Engineer Exhaust Systems This role focuses on designing and developing exhaust system components and assemblies using advanced CAD tools.
The Design
Engineer will create and modify 3D models and 2D drawings for exhaust systems, ensuring manufacturability, accuracy, and proper integration within automotive packaging and vehicle environments. The position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of exhaust components, contribute to product performance and durability, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in an engineering-driven environment.
Responsibilities
- Create and modify 3D CAD models for exhaust system components and assemblies, including exhaust pipes, mufflers and silencers, hangers and brackets, and heat shields.
- Develop detailed 2D manufacturing drawings that include GD&T;, dimensional tolerances, bills of materials (BOM), and welding specifications.
- Ensure that exhaust system designs meet automotive packaging requirements and integrate effectively within the overall vehicle architecture.
- Apply sheet metal design principles to develop robust and manufacturable exhaust components such as brackets, shields, and housings.
- Use surfacing design techniques to achieve accurate geometries for complex exhaust and heat shield surfaces.
- Design tubing layouts and routings for exhaust pipes that meet performance, durability, and packaging constraints.
- Perform ad hoc NX simulations as needed to support design validation and optimization activities.
- Prepare and maintain design documentation in line with established engineering processes and standards.
- Collaborate with other engineers and relevant stakeholders to address design issues and incorporate feedback into updated models and drawings.
- Support continuous improvement of exhaust system designs by refining models, drawings, and specifications based on testing, feedback, and best practices.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in Siemens NX for 3D CAD modeling of mechanical components and assemblies.
- Experience creating and modifying 3D CAD models for exhaust system components such as pipes, mufflers or silencers, hangers, brackets, and heat shields.
- Strong skills in generating detailed 2D manufacturing drawings, including application of GD&T;, tolerances, bills of materials (BOM), and welding specifications.
- Hands-on experience with sheet metal design for components such as brackets and heat shields.
- Capability in surfacing design to model complex geometries and freeform surfaces.
- Experience with tubing design, including routing and packaging of exhaust pipes.
- Solid understanding of automotive packaging requirements and vehicle integration for exhaust systems.
- Working knowledge of GD&T; and its correct application to ensure functional and manufacturable designs.
- Ability to perform basic or ad hoc simulations in NX to support design decisions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with DICV processes and documentation practices is an advantage.
- mechanical or automotive design, particularly related to exhaust systems, is beneficial.
- Experience with other CAD tools such as CATIA is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in CAD modeling and drafting.
- Ability to follow established design standards, documentation procedures, and engineering workflows.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
Work Environment The role is based in an engineering-focused environment that relies heavily on Siemens NX and related CAD and simulation tools for daily design work. You will primarily work at a workstation using 3D modeling and drafting software to develop exhaust system components and assemblies, while collaborating with other engineers and stakeholders through regular design reviews and documentation exchanges. The position involves working within defined automotive packaging and vehicle integration constraints, adhering to established processes and documentation standards, and using digital tools to manage drawings, BOMs, and specifications.
