About the role
eG Innovations is a product company looking for a Java Developer who enjoys solving hard, open-ended problems. This role is 100% research-driven: you will investigate unknowns, prototype ideas and turn findings into production-grade product features.
No two weeks look the same. You will dig into JVM internals, performance bottlenecks and complex runtime behaviour, and help shape how our product observes and diagnoses Java applications.
Location: [Hybrid] • Experience: 57 years • Employment type: Full-time
Key responsibilities
- Research, prototype and evaluate new approaches for the product, then take the winning ideas into production-quality Java code.
- Perform in-depth troubleshooting of Java applications: memory leaks, thread contention, deadlocks, GC pauses, class-loading issues and CPU hotspots.
- Analyse heap dumps, thread dumps, GC logs and JFR recordings to find root causes, and document findings clearly.
- Explore JVM internals, bytecode instrumentation and agent-based techniques where the product needs them.
- Run proof-of-concepts and benchmarks, and present results with data to product and engineering leads.
- Design and build features that are performant, observable and reliable at scale.
- Stay current with the Java ecosystem and observability space, and bring new ideas to the team.
- Collaborate with product, QA and fellow engineers in a fast-moving, changing environment.
Required skills and qualifications
- Minimum 5 to maximum 7 years of hands-on experience in Core Java (Java 11+; Java 17/21 preferred).
- Solid grasp of JVM internals: memory model, garbage collectors (G1, ZGC, Shenandoah), JIT compilation and class loading.
- Proven in-depth Java troubleshooting in production: memory leaks, OutOfMemoryErrors, high CPU,
thread deadlocks and latency spikes.
- Hands-on with diagnostic tools such as jstack, jmap, jcmd, Java Flight Recorder, JDK Mission Control, VisualVM, Eclipse MAT or async-profiler.
- Solid knowledge of multithreading, concurrency and performance tuning.
- Experience with Spring / Spring Boot, REST APIs and microservices.
- Comfortable with Linux, Git, Maven or Gradle, and debugging in containerised environments (Docker, Kubernetes).
- A research mindset: curious, self-driven, comfortable with ambiguity and able to explain findings clearly.
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Added advantage
- OpenTelemetry (OTEL): hands-on with the OTEL Java agent, SDK, manual and auto-instrumentation, context propagation and the OTEL Collector.
- Monitoring and observability: experience with metrics, logs and distributed tracing using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, Zipkin, Elastic/ELK, Datadog, New Relic, Dynatrace or AppDynamics.
- Familiarity with Java agents, bytecode manipulation (ByteBuddy, ASM, Javassist) or the JVMTI.
- Understanding of APM concepts: SLIs/SLOs, alerting, and dashboards that lead to faster root-cause analysis.
- Contributions to open-source projects, technical blogs or conference talks on Java performance or observability.
Who will thrive here
You will enjoy this role if you would rather chase down why a JVM behaves strangely than repeat the same CRUD feature. You like freedom to experiment, and you take ownership from idea to shipped product.
What we offer
- Fully research-oriented work on a core product, with real influence on its direction.
- Time and room to explore current technologies and build proof-of-concepts.
- A collaborative team of engineers who value deep technical work.
