Position Title: Design Manager Department: Engineering / Product Design &
Development Reports To: Head of Engineering / Director of Operations
Role Overview
The Design Manager is responsible for leading the design engineering function,
overseeing end-to-end design operations from initial concept through production
handoff. This role blends technical leadership, design validation, resource planning,
and cross-functional coordination with manufacturing, quality, and project
management teams to ensure deliverables meet functional, aesthetic, quality, and
budgetary requirements.
Core Key Result Areas (KRAs) & Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Project Execution: Lead, mentor, and allocate work across the
design engineering team to meet project milestones. Direct product design
workflows: concept modeling, detailed 3D CAD modeling, 2D drafting, assembly
generation, and Bill of Materials (BOM) creation. Establish and maintain
standardized design libraries, revision control, and Product Data Management
(PDM/PLM) protocols.
Design Validation & Compliance:
Conduct thorough Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
reviews prior to tooling and fabrication release. Ensure engineering calculations,
tolerance stack-up analyses, and simulations (FEA/stress analysis) comply with
functional and safety standards. Verify that all technical documentation,



engineering
change orders (ECOs), and production drawings adhere to applicable industry
standards (ISO, ASME, DIN).
Cross-Functional & Vendor Coordination:
Collaborate closely with production, tooling, and fabrication units to resolve design-
related issues on the shop floor. Coordinate with vendors, prototype developers, and
component suppliers regarding material specifications, tooling feasibility, and sample
approvals. Support the quality control team by establishing inspection benchmarks,
critical-to-quality (CTQ) dimensions, and testing parameters.
Process Improvement & Team Development:
Implement best practices in CAD automation, modeling standards, and digital workflow
optimization. Drive continuous cost-reduction initiatives through value engineering
and material optimization. Conduct periodic technical training and performance
reviews for junior engineers and draftsmen.
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
On-Time Release: Punctual delivery of design freezes, production drawings, and ECO
approvals.
First-Time-Right (FTR) Rate: Minimization of design revisions post-tooling or during
pilot production.
Cost & Weight Optimization: Measurable reductions in material usage or manufacturing
cycle time via value engineering.
Team Throughput: Effective task distribution and development of team capabilities.
