The Role

We are looking for a hands-on Lead Backend Engineer to build and scale the backend systems powering our AI-native enterprise products. This is a high-ownership role for someone with a strong product mindset who enjoys solving complex customer problems at scale. You will lead key technical initiatives, help evolve our platform for global enterprise customers, and manage a talented engineering team.

What You’ll Do

- Lead the design, development, and scaling of backend systems powering Peoplebox’s AI-driven talent management platform.
- Build scalable services and APIs for performance reviews, goals, feedback, 1:1s, employee data, analytics, integrations, and workflow automation.
- Develop and operate AI-powered workflows using LLMs, retrieval, tool calling, structured outputs, evaluations, and agentic systems.
- Build AI orchestration workflows using LangChain, LangGraph, or comparable frameworks.
- Develop backend services using Ruby on Rails and/or Python with FastAPI, making thoughtful technology choices based on product and platform needs.
- Design robust data models and high-performance systems using PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, background jobs, queues, caching, and event-driven architectures.
- Build secure, reliable integrations with enterprise tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Jira, Google Workspace, and HRIS platforms.
- Partner with Product,



Design, AI/ML, and customer-facing teams to understand enterprise requirements and deliver high-quality, customer-focused solutions.
- Ensure our platform meets high standards for reliability, performance, security, data privacy, and observability.
- Make sound engineering decisions across scalability, maintainability, delivery speed, customer experience, and cost.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of engineers—setting clear priorities, raising the engineering bar, and enabling the team to deliver ambitious outcomes.
- Drive engineering excellence through code reviews, architecture reviews, technical planning, documentation, and strong operational practices.

What We’re Looking For

- 5–8 years of backend engineering experience, including ownership of customer-facing production systems.
- Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails and/or Python, with experience building APIs using frameworks such as FastAPI.
- Solid experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimisation, performance tuning, and data modelling.
- Solid understanding of Redis, queues, background jobs, caching, asynchronous workflows, and distributed systems.
- Experience designing scalable APIs, multi-tenant SaaS applications,



third-party integrations, and event-driven architectures.
- Hands-on experience building LLM-powered products, including RAG, prompt orchestration, tool calling, structured outputs, AI evaluations, and reliability practices.
- Experience with LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalent agent/workflow orchestration frameworks.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, logging, monitoring, tracing, and debugging production systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead or manage a talented engineering team through technical direction, mentorship, feedback, prioritisation, and accountability.
- Strong product mindset: you care about customer problems, usability, business impact, and not just implementation.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, take ownership, and independently drive complex initiatives from problem definition through delivery.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across Engineering, Product, Design, AI/ML, and customer-facing teams.

Nice to Have

- Experience building B2B SaaS or enterprise software for global customers.
- Experience with HR tech, talent management, performance management, or workflow automation products.
- Experience with Slack, Microsoft Teams, Jira, Google Workspace, HRIS, or similar third-party integrations.
- Familiarity with enterprise security, privacy, RBAC, audit trails, compliance, and data-governance requirements.
- Experience improving the quality, safety, and evaluation of AI-powered product features.
