Assistant Manager – Underwriter

We are seeking an experienced and analytical Assistant Manager – Underwriter to join our growing underwriting team. In this pivotal role, you will assess, evaluate, and approve insurance applications—both medical and non-medical—while ensuring alignment with company risk guidelines and regulatory standards. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, mentor junior underwriters, and help optimize underwriting processes to support profitable growth and exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities:

1. Evaluate and underwrite life insurance applications (medical, non-medical, and term) in accordance with company policies and risk appetite.
2. Perform detailed risk assessments by analyzing medical records, financial statements, and lifestyle information to determine insurability and appropriate coverage terms.
3. Provide authoritative approval or declination decisions within delegated authority limits, escalating complex cases as needed.
4. Collaborate with actuarial, sales, and claims teams to ensure seamless policy issuance and ongoing risk management.
5. Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging trends, and recommend adjustments to underwriting guidelines.




6. Coach, train, and oversee junior underwriters to enhance technical capabilities and decision accuracy.
7. Support process improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of underwriting best practices and automation tools.

Requirements:

1. Bachelor’s degree
2. 3–10 years of progressive underwriting experience in life insurance, with exposure to medical, non-medical, and term products.
3. Solid understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory frameworks.
4. Strong analytical and decision-making skills with keen attention to detail.
5. Excellent communication and stakeholder-management abilities to collaborate across multifunctional teams.
6. Proficiency in underwriting software, medical databases, and MS Office applications.

Nice to Have:

1. Skilled designations such as FLMI, FALU, or LOMA certifications.
2. Experience implementing automated underwriting platforms or digital transformation projects.
3. Knowledge of data analytics tools (e.g., SQL, Python, or BI software) for advanced risk analysis.
