Job Summery
The Senior Analyst, FBM FP&A; will be a hands-on finance and analytics professional responsible for building high-quality FP&A;, reporting, financial modeling and decision-support capabilities for FBM.
This is not a role for someone learning how to operate as a Senior Analyst.
The role requires a strong combination of FP&A; expertise, financial modeling, SQL, Python, data interpretation, business acumen and communication. The Senior Analyst must leverage Lowe’s best FP&A; and retail practices and apply them to the FBM business.
The Senior Analyst will work with detailed transaction-level data, navigate new data lakes and financial hierarchies, understand unfamiliar data fields and definitions, and convert raw information into financial models and insights that explain business performance.
Key Responsibilities
FP&A; and Financial Analysis
- Perform financial reporting, forecasting, planning, variance analysis and ad hoc business analysis across FBM.
- Build financial models to explain and decompose sales, margin, expense, productivity and other business performance drivers.
- Develop driver-based forecasting models using appropriate operational and financial inputs.
- Support monthly, quarterly and annual FP&A; cycles, including close, forecast, outlook and planning processes.
- Perform scenario analysis using multiple approaches and recommend the most appropriate path based on data, facts and business context.
- Move beyond reporting variances to explain why performance changed, what is driving the movement and what actions the business should consider.
- Establish and maintain key financial and operating metrics.
Data and Advanced Analytics
- Independently work with large, complex and unfamiliar datasets.
- Navigate transaction-level data, data lakes, financial hierarchies, master data and evolving data definitions.
- Use SQL extensively to extract, join, validate and analyze data from multiple sources.
- Use Python for analytical modeling, automation, data transformation, statistical analysis and scalable financial analysis.
- Develop analytical datasets and reusable data models that improve consistency and repeatability.
- Identify data-quality issues, reconciliation gaps and inconsistencies across sources.
- Work with Technology and Data teams to understand source systems and improve reliability of financial information.
- Use analytical and statistical methods, where appropriate, to segment and benchmark stores, branches, customers, products or other business entities using financial and operational characteristics.
Financial Modeling and Decision Support
- Build robust models that connect financial outcomes to underlying operational drivers.
- Develop frameworks for sales decomposition, expense decomposition, margin analysis, productivity, forecasting and business performance measurement.
- Translate ambiguous business questions into structured analytical problems.
- Evaluate alternative hypotheses rather than defaulting to the first available explanation.
- Develop business cases, scenario models and decision-support analyses for Finance and business leaders.
- Progressively support deeper areas such as pricing, costing, customer profitability, margin decomposition and operational productivity.
Reporting, Visualization and Automation
- Build and maintain financial reports, dashboards and analytical tools used for forecasting, performance management and decision-making.
- Help rationalize existing reporting by identifying redundant, low-value or duplicate outputs.
- Build scalable self-service reporting solutions where appropriate.
- Use Power BI as an analytical and visualization platform rather than merely as a mechanism to extract data.
- Leverage Excel, Power Query, Power Pivot, VBA, SQL and Python to automate recurring processes and reduce manual intervention.
- Ensure reports and analytical models are accurate, controlled, documented and repeatable.
- Maintain an uncompromising focus on accuracy and timeliness.
Business Partnership
- Work directly with FBM Finance leaders and business partners in the United States.
- Independently initiate conversations with stakeholders when additional context or clarification is required.
- Participate actively in performance reviews, FP&A; discussions and business meetings rather than functioning only as a back-end analyst.
- Develop sufficient understanding of FBM’s business to engage directly with field operators and business leaders on performance.
- Explain complex financial models, analytical logic and data findings in simple business language.
- Convert business questions into analytical frameworks and analytical findings into clear business implications.
- Build credibility through strong analysis, responsiveness, business understanding and sound judgment.
Thought Leadership and Constructive Challenge
- Bring an independent point of view to the work.
- Question existing processes, methodologies and assumptions when the underlying logic can be improved.
- Be comfortable challenging the status quo respectfully and using data to support an alternative perspective.
- Identify opportunities proactively rather than waiting for detailed instructions.
- Work through ambiguity when the initial problem statement, available information or analytical approach is incomplete.
- Present multiple possible approaches and recommend a path based on evidence.
- Demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a strong desire to understand why a result occurred, not merely report that it occurred.
A successful Senior Analyst will:
- Independently own complex FP&A; and analytical deliverables.
- Build credibility directly with FBM Finance and business leaders.
- Become highly proficient in navigating FBM’s data environment.
- Develop financial models that materially improve understanding of business performance.
- Turn fragmented data into clear, decision-ready insights.
- Identify data, process and reporting issues without waiting for someone else to point them out.
- Consistently deliver accurate, timely and well-controlled outputs.
- Simplify complicated financial and analytical concepts for non-technical audiences.
- Challenge weak assumptions or processes constructively.
- Help transition the team from basic reporting toward stronger forecasting, analytics and decision support.
- Become someone stakeholders approach with difficult questions, not merely routine reporting requests.
Qualifications
- B.Tech, Bachelor of Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Economics or related undergraduate degree, with MBA Finance, Chartered Accountant or equivalent advanced qualification preferred.
- 4+ years of relevant experience in FP&A;, financial analytics, business finance or decision support.
- Solid financial planning, forecasting, variance analysis and financial-modeling experience.
- Intermediate to advanced SQL querying skills. This is a core requirement.
- Intermediate to advanced Python capability for analytics, automation and data manipulation. This is a core requirement.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Power Query, Power Pivot and automation techniques. VBA exposure is valuable.
- Strong Power BI capability.
- Exposure to environments such as GCP, Teradata, Hadoop or similar enterprise data platforms.
- Strong data collation, compilation, validation, visualization and analytical skills.
- Strong lateral thinking, problem solving and data-interpretation ability.
- Ability to independently structure ambiguous business problems.
- Ability to build clear, intuitive financial-performance commentary.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.
We are particularly interested in Senior Analysts who are:
- Already proven at Senior Analyst level, rather than candidates aspiring to grow into the role.
- Technically strong enough to work independently with SQL, Python, Excel and Power BI.
- Comfortable opening a new dataset and figuring out unfamiliar columns, tables, hierarchies and definitions.
- Strong financial modelers who can connect business activity to P&L; outcomes.
- Capable of engaging directly with senior Finance stakeholders.
- Confident enough to speak directly with field operators and explain performance in practical business terms.
- Comfortable asking difficult questions when numbers, assumptions or processes do not make sense.
- Curious enough to keep digging when the initial answer looks incomplete.
- Able to simplify complex analytical logic for senior leaders.
- Comfortable working without a perfectly defined problem statement.
- Proactive enough to identify the next question before being asked.
- Collaborative, but not passive.
- Respectful, but not afraid to disagree.
• Focused on business outcomes rather than simply completing tasks.
