About the RoleWe’re hiring L2 Protocol Developers to design, develop, optimize and debug Layer 2 protocol features for LTE and 5G NR RAN products. You’ll work on eNodeB/gNodeB software across vRAN, O-RAN and custom deployments, focusing on MAC scheduling, RLC and PDCP functionality, performance optimization, and seamless integration with Layer 1 and Layer 3. The role involves solving complex protocol issues, improving throughput and latency, and delivering high-performance 4G/5G wireless solutions.
Must-Have Skills
- Strong hands-on experience in RAN Layer 2 protocols: MAC and RLC, with PDCP knowledge.
- Proficiency in C++ (C/Python is a plus).
- Solid understanding of 3GPP specifications for LTE and 5G NR.
- Experience in Telecom / Wireless / 4G / LTE / 5G environments.
Positive to Have
- Google Test Framework (GTF).
- MAC scheduling algorithms for LTE eNodeB and 5G NR gNodeB, including design, development, optimization and debugging.
- L2 procedures and functionality: segmentation/reassembly, retransmission, flow control, packet splitting/duplication, QoS and logical channel prioritization.
- Understanding of TDD/FDD timing, HARQ, uplink grant strategies, DRX, buffer status reporting and scheduler timing.
- Performance optimization for latency, throughput, retransmission efficiency, fairness and power-saving behaviour.
- L2 interfaces with the Physical Layer (L1), Layer 3 (L3), OAM and 3GPP RAN split architectures.
- Programming and debugging in C/C++/Python, including memory management, state-machine design,
error handling and interoperability engineering.
- ASN.1 and protocol decoding workflows.
- Log and trace analysis using Wireshark, QCAT, Viavi, IxLoad Wireless, IxNetwork and Spirent Landslide.
- Experience with DPDK, VPP, SR-IOV, hugepages, SmartNIC/DPU and FPGA/SoC-based radio acceleration.
- Linux performance tuning, multithreading, IPC and virtualized DU/CU deployments on x86/ARM platforms.
- Diagnosis of KPI degradation using L2 traces, PCAPs, timing logs, RF test outputs and traffic emulators.
- Experience in L2 software development, product sustenance and delivery of 4G/5G programs.
What You’ll Do
- Design, architect, develop, debug and implement 4G/5G L2 protocol features for FDD and TDD deployments.
- Develop and optimize MAC scheduling algorithms and MAC/RLC/PDCP functionality for LTE and NR base stations.
- Improve throughput, latency, retransmission efficiency, fairness, QoS and overall system performance.
- Integrate and validate L2 functionality with L1, L3, OAM and other system components across multiple platforms.
- Troubleshoot complex protocol, interoperability and performance issues using system logs, traces, PCAPs and specialized testing tools.
- Support feature scalability, system-level optimization and robust implementation across different UE, chipset and network-vendor combinations.
- Contribute to high-performance base-station development across vRAN, O-RAN and custom architectures.
- Senior candidates will review designs, mentor team members, drive large-scale 4G/5G L2 development and sustenance programs, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
