1. To manage sourcing, supplier development, commercial negotiations, cost optimization, and timely procurement of electrical and electronic components for EV motor, motor controller, and gearbox manufacturing. The role requires a strong understanding of electrical/electronic components, supplier capabilities, cost structures, and automotive quality requirements to ensure competitive pricing, reliable supply, and sustainable business profitability.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Electrical & Electronic Component Sourcing
- Source and procure electrical and electronic components for EV motors, motor controllers, and related EV systems.
- Handle sourcing of components such as:
- Power semiconductors: MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC devices and power modules.
- Electronic components: capacitors, resistors, diodes, ICs and gate drivers.
- PCB assemblies, connectors, wiring harnesses and terminals.
- Sensors, relays, fuses, contactors and protection components.
- Magnet wire, permanent magnets, electrical steel laminations and insulation materials.
- Cooling components, busbars and other electrical/mechanical parts used in EV systems.
- Identify technically capable suppliers, evaluate quotations and develop alternate sources.
- Coordinate with R&D;, design, quality and manufacturing teams for component selection, validation and supplier approval.
B. Cost Optimization & Commercial Negotiation
- Negotiate prices, payment terms, tooling costs, minimum order quantities, lead times and commercial conditions.
- Conduct should-cost analysis and price benchmarking using BOMs, material costs, conversion costs and market quotations.
- Drive VA/VE initiatives and localization of imported components.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction without compromising quality, reliability or performance.
- Support target costing and product cost improvement initiatives for new and existing EV products.
- Track commodity price movements, foreign exchange exposure and supplier price revisions.
D. Procurement Planning & Delivery
- Ensure material availability based on production plans, customer schedules and current product launches.
- Manage purchase orders, delivery schedules, open-order tracking and supplier follow-ups.
- Monitor lead times, MOQ, inventory levels and excess/obsolete stock risks.
- Coordinate with planning, stores, production and finance teams to prevent line stoppages.
- Support material planning for prototype builds, validation trials and customer pilot orders.
E. New Product Development (NPD) Sourcing
- Participate in new EV product development from the concept and prototype stages.
- Obtain early supplier quotations and support BOM cost estimation.
- Coordinate sample procurement, component validation and PPAP/APQP documentation, where applicable.
- Support engineering changes, alternate component approvals and design-to-cost initiatives.
- Ensure sourcing readiness before pilot production and mass-production launch.
F. Quality, Compliance & Risk Management
- Coordinate with supplier quality and engineering teams on component defects and corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with applicable customer, automotive and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor component obsolescence, counterfeit risks, semiconductor availability and supply-chain disruptions.
- Support traceability, change-control and supplier documentation requirements.
3. Educational Qualification
- B.E./B.Tech in Electrical, Electronics, ECE, EEE, Mechatronics or a related engineering discipline.
- Relevant procurement or supply-chain certification is an added advantage.
4. Experience & Technical Competencies
- 4–6 years of experience in procurement or strategic sourcing, preferably in EVs, automotive electronics, power electronics or electrical equipment.
- Hands-on experience sourcing electrical and electronic components.
- Understanding of electronic BOMs, component specifications, datasheets, voltage/current ratings, thermal requirements and component lifecycles.
- Working knowledge of supplier qualification, cost breakdowns, negotiation and alternate sourcing.
- Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, IATF 16949, RoHS and REACH requirements, as applicable.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and advanced Excel.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with engineering, quality, manufacturing and finance teams.
5. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
1. Purchase cost reduction: Achieve an agreed annual cost reduction target, typically 3–5% on addressable spend, subject to commodity movements and business conditions.
2. Supplier on-time delivery: Target at least 95%.
3. Material availability: Zero production stoppages attributable to buyer-controlled procurement failures.
4. Alternate source development: Develop qualified alternate sources for agreed critical components.
5. NPD sourcing readiness: Complete sourcing and supplier nomination as per project milestones.
6. Purchase price variance: Maintain and report actual purchase prices against approved target costs.
7. Inventory control: Reduce excess, obsolete and slow-moving procurement-related inventory.
8. Commercial compliance: Ensure purchase orders follow approved prices, terms and authorization limits.
9. Localization: Deliver agreed localization and import-substitution targets.
6. Essential Behavioral Competencies
- Strong commercial negotiation and analytical skills.
- Technical curiosity and the ability to understand engineering requirements.
- Ownership, urgency and a proactive approach to supplier follow-up.
- Data-driven decision-making and disciplined documentation.
- Cross-functional collaboration and effective communication.
- Ethical sourcing practices and sound commercial judgment.
7. Preferred Candidate Profile A technically strong buyer who can understand EV electrical and electronic components, challenge supplier quotations, identify cost-reduction opportunities, develop alternate suppliers and ensure uninterrupted material availability. The candidate should combine engineering understanding with commercial acumen and be comfortable working in a fast-growing EV business environment. Success in this role means: Lower component costs, dependable supply, faster NPD sourcing, reduced supply-chain risk and improved EV product profitability.
