Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented SPIDAcalc Reference Layer Designer to complete and validate existing pole reference models for telecommunications infrastructure projects. The role involves working with partially completed SPIDAcalc reference layers generated from LiDAR and field survey data, ensuring accurate representation of existing field conditions in accordance with JUB best practices and BC Hydro standards.
The successful candidate will be responsible for importing client-provided JSON files, completing existing pole and attachment modelling, verifying span connectivity, conducting quality checks, and documenting field issues for client review.
This role focuses exclusively on the existing measured/reference layer and does not include proposed network design or loading analysis.
Key Responsibilities
1. SPIDAcalc Reference Layer Modelling
- Set up the client-provided SPIDAcalc file as the base project before importing the pole reference layer JSON files.
- Import and complete partially built reference layers, typically 70–80% complete, for each pole.
- Accurately model existing pole conditions, including:
- Pole height and class.
- Insulators, crossarms, and existing power equipment.
- Streetlights and associated fixtures.
- Existing communication strands and cables, including attachment heights.
- Guys, anchors, and associated hardware.
- Span lengths, directions, and connectivity between poles.
- Ensure all modelled elements reflect the available field survey, LiDAR, and Street View evidence.
- Follow applicable JUB modelling best practices and BC Hydro standards.
2. Survey Data Interpretation
- Review IKE PDF survey reports and associated field photographs for fully surveyed poles.
- Use available LiDAR data and Street View imagery to verify existing conditions for partially surveyed poles.
- Interpret pole configurations, attachment positions, equipment arrangements, and span details.
- Identify discrepancies between the existing reference model and available survey evidence.
3. Quality Control and Validation
- Perform self-QC on every pole before delivery.
- Verify pole configurations, equipment and wire counts, and attachment heights.
- Confirm that all spans are correctly connected to the appropriate poles.
- Check model consistency against available photographs, LiDAR data, and Street View imagery.
- Ensure all required poles are included and correctly organized in the final deliverables.
4.
Field Issue Identification and Reporting Identify and flag potential field issues without modifying or correcting the existing field condition in the model, including:
- Damaged, leaning, or visibly deteriorated poles.
- Potential guy-wire or anchor issues.
- Existing clearance or separation concerns.
- Poles located on BC Hydro transmission lines.
Maintain an Excel-based QC and exception register identifying each pole by pole name or latitude/longitude and clearly documenting the issues observed. Since SPIDAcalc does not provide a comment system for this workflow, all identified issues must be recorded in the Excel sheet for internal or client review. 5. Deliverable Preparation
- Prepare completed SPIDAcalc files containing the measured/reference layer for each Field Service Area (FSA).
- Organize deliverables into packages of approximately 100 poles per file.
- Split larger FSAs into clearly identified packages, such as Part 1 and Part 2.
- Ensure no pole is duplicated across multiple packages.
- Prepare and submit the corresponding Excel QC and flagged-pole register, accounting for every pole within the FSA.
- Verify file completeness, naming consistency, and overall deliverable quality before submission.
Scope Limitations The role is restricted to existing reference layer modelling. The following activities are excluded from the scope:
- Proposed network design, including new communication strands, client fibre routes, MPT drops, and recommended design layers.
- Pole loading analysis.
- Clearance and separation calculations or compliance checks.
- Make-ready engineering, make-ready sheets, and construction prints.
- Drawing review, which is handled internally.
- Field surveys and site inspections.
- Engineering certification or professional engineering stamps.
Any observed field concerns must be documented and flagged for review rather than independently corrected or addressed through proposed designs.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Practical experience with SPIDAcalc and pole reference layer modelling.
- Understanding of telecommunications Outside Plant (OSP)
and overhead utility infrastructure.
- Knowledge of utility pole configurations, crossarms, insulators, communication cables, guy wires, anchors, and attachment heights.
- Ability to interpret LiDAR data, field survey reports, pole photographs, and Street View imagery.
- Familiarity with span measurements, pole-to-pole connectivity, and existing infrastructure documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify discrepancies in engineering models.
- Experience with Excel for QC tracking, exception reporting, and deliverable management.
- Ability to follow client-specific standards, modelling guidelines, and established quality procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with BC Hydro standards or similar Canadian utility infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with JUB best practices for pole modelling.
- Experience working with IKE survey reports and LiDAR-based pole data.
- Experience supporting Canadian telecom fibre and OSP engineering projects.
- Knowledge of utility attachment arrangements and overhead communication infrastructure.
Key Performance Expectations
- Accurate and complete reference layer modelling for all assigned poles.
- Reliable verification of pole equipment, attachment heights, and span connectivity.
- Consistent adherence to applicable modelling standards and project instructions.
- Complete and traceable documentation of all identified field issues.
- Delivery of well-organized SPIDAcalc files and corresponding Excel QC registers.
- Minimal rework through effective self-QC and attention to detail.
Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a technically proficient and quality-focused SPIDAcalc designer who can independently interpret survey information, accurately model existing utility pole conditions, identify discrepancies, and deliver clean, well-organized reference layers. The candidate must understand the distinction between documenting existing field conditions and performing proposed design or engineering analysis. Application: Interested candidates may submit their updated resume highlighting their SPIDAcalc experience, OSP engineering background, and relevant utility pole modelling projects.
