Job Summary The Blood Bank Technician is responsible for performing blood grouping, compatibility testing, blood component preparation, storage, and issue procedures in accordance with established laboratory protocols and hospital quality standards. The role ensures the safe handling of blood and blood components while maintaining accurate documentation and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Perform ABO and Rh blood grouping, antibody screening, and compatibility testing (cross-matching).
- Assist in blood collection, donor screening, and donor sample processing as per approved protocols and authorization.
- Prepare, process, label, and store blood components according to established procedures.
- Ensure proper storage conditions for blood and blood components and monitor temperature records.
- Perform pre-transfusion testing and verification procedures before issuing blood components.
- Maintain accurate records of blood collection, testing, component preparation, storage, issue, and disposal.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), biosafety guidelines, and infection prevention practices.
- Operate, maintain, and perform routine checks on laboratory equipment and blood bank instruments.
- Identify and report discrepancies, reactive results, unsuitable units, and transfusion-related incidents to the authorized personnel.
- Monitor inventory,



expiry dates, and availability of blood components to support timely patient care.
- Participate in internal quality control, proficiency testing, audits, and quality improvement activities.
- Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal in accordance with hospital policies.
- Maintain confidentiality of donor and patient information.
- Coordinate with clinical departments and authorized medical personnel regarding blood availability and transfusion requirements.

Educational Qualification
- B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT) or an equivalent qualification recognized for the role.

Experience
- Minimum 1–2 years of relevant experience in a hospital blood bank or transfusion medicine laboratory preferred.
- Freshers may be considered based on qualification and applicable regulatory requirements.

Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of blood grouping, cross-matching, and transfusion medicine laboratory procedures.
- Familiarity with blood component preparation, storage, and inventory management.
- Knowledge of quality control, biosafety, and infection control practices.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in sample identification and documentation.
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment and maintain records.
- Valuable communication, teamwork, and coordination skills.
- Ability to work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
