Role & responsibilities
Technical leadership
- Own technical design and delivery for IBM i initiatives, ensuring solutions are secure, resilient, and supportable.
- Provide day-to-day technical direction to developers (coding standards, design reviews, estimation, and prioritisation).
- Lead root-cause analysis for major incidents and drive permanent fixes (problem management).
- Partner with architecture, infrastructure, security, and product owners to align delivery with strategic roadmaps.
- Ensure documentation is fit for purpose: solution designs, runbooks, support guides, and knowledge articles.
Hands-on IBM i development
- Design, develop, and maintain IBM i applications using RPGLE (Free preferred), CL/CLLE, COBOL (as applicable).
- Work with DB2 for i (SQL, performance tuning, indexing strategies, locking/journalling considerations).
- Apply IBM i operational concepts: subsystems, job queues, output queues, work management, and scheduling.
- Implement robust exception handling, logging, and recovery patterns to improve operational resilience.
Production support & operational excellence
- Provide L3 production support and technical oversight for L2 teams; participate in on-call/major incident support as required.
- Drive stability improvements through trend analysis, defect prevention, and proactive monitoring enhancements.
- Own release readiness: deployment planning, back-out strategies, post-release validation, and production sign-off.
Data migration & integration
- Lead/execute data migration activities(analysis,mapping,ETL,reconciliation,cutover planning,validation & Implementation).
- Enable and consume integrations using API concepts (REST/JSON), service enablement patterns, and middleware where relevant.
- Ensure integrations are observable and supportable (logging, alerts, error handling, retries).
Automation, Python, and AI (preferred)
- Build automation using Python (or similar) for migration, operational tasks, reconciliation, reporting, and validation.
- Explore AI-enabled improvements (e.g., log analytics, anomaly detection, incident triage support) in collaboration with platform/tooling teams.
- Promote CI/CD and test automation practices for IBM i delivery where tooling supports it.
Agile delivery & ways of working
- Lead technical delivery in Agile (Scrum/Kanban): refinement, estimation, sprint planning, and continuous improvement.
- Coach the team on engineering practices (quality gates, peer reviews, definition of done, and technical debt management).
To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:
- 5+ years hands-on experience with IBM i / iSeries / AS400 in enterprise environments.
- Robust development experience in RPGLE (Free), CLLE (COBOL a plus depending on estate).
- Strong DB2 for i capability:
SQL, performance tuning, data modelling concepts, and troubleshooting.
- Proven track record in production support, troubleshooting, and major incident/root-cause analysis.
- Solid understanding of exception handling, resilience patterns, and operational controls.
- Working knowledge of API usage and integration concepts (REST, JSON, authentication basics).
- Strong analytical and communication skillsable to translate complex technical issues into clear actions and decisions.
Preferred / nice-to-have
- Python scripting and automation experience.
- Exposure to AI/ML concepts or practical AIOps use cases.
- Experience leading data migration programmes (ETL, reconciliation, cutover).
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, version control (Git), and automated testing approaches.
- Experience modernising IBM i applications (service enablement, refactoring, hybrid integration).
Leadership behaviours (what we look for)
- Takes ownership end-to-end and drives outcomes at pace.
- Builds inclusive, collaborative teams and supports knowledge-sharing.
- Makes pragmatic decisions with a focus on stability, risk management, and long-term maintainability.
- IBM i troubleshooting scenario + RCA approach
- DB2 for i performance tuning case
- API integration design and error-handling strategy
- Production support readiness and release governance
- Example of automation delivered (Python/other) and measurable impact
