Role Purpose
This role supports the payroll function for the client's Australia and New Zealand workforce, delivering accurate, timely, compliant pay across every cycle. You process the day-to-day payroll, keep transactions in line with AU and NZ legislation, and resolve team-member queries within SLA. You also help identify improvements, contribute to system changes and UAT, and protect data integrity across the payroll systems.
It exists because dependable, compliant pay at high volume needs analysts who get the detail right on every run and keep the team-member experience smooth.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Processing & Delivery
- Process day-to-day, end-to-end payroll for all employees across weekly, fortnightly, and monthly cycles – pay runs, reconciliations, overpayments, termination calculations, and reporting – accurately and on time.
- Create and review off-cycle and ad hoc payments, and validate payroll inputs including timesheets, benefits, deductions, and bonuses.
- Action Payroll Control Centre (PCC) alerts to maintain accuracy, and process end-to-end terminations – final pay, Employment Termination Payments (ETPs), redundancy, leave encashments, and statutory reporting.
- Administer employee leave entitlements accurately – annual, personal, long service, parental, and termination-related payouts.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure end-to-end compliance with Australian payroll legislation – Fair Work Act, National Employment Standards, Modern Awards, Enterprise Agreements, and applicable federal and state regulations – alongside New Zealand requirements.
- Interpret and apply Modern Awards and Enterprise Agreements accurately: classifications, overtime, penalty rates, allowances, shift loadings, public-holiday payments, and leave entitlements.
- Support PAYG withholding, Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting and annual finalization, Superannuation Guarantee and Super Stream compliance, and payroll tax across states and territories.
- Keep current with legislative and regulatory change (Fair Work, ATO, Superannuation, Wage Theft, Payroll Tax, state obligations) and validate employee and contractor classifications to reduce misclassification risk.
- Apply governance controls – 4-eye checks, reconciliation, exception handling, and risk mitigation – keep records and pay slips to legislative standards and audit-ready, and support internal and external stakeholders during client payroll audits.
Reporting & Analytics
- Analyze payroll data to spot trends, discrepancies, and improvement opportunities, and prepare payroll reports for management and audit.
- Monitor service performance and system analytics to surface continuous improvement opportunities and meet KPIs aligned with People Services SLAs.
Query Resolution & Support
- Resolve Tier 2 payroll queries within SLA, supporting the People Advisory team, and respond to employee queries on pay, deductions, and benefits with clear guidance on policies and procedures.
- Escalate complex issues to leadership for resolution and support newer team members by sharing knowledge and good practice.
Systems, Change & Continuous Improvement
- Work across multiple platforms – SAP Payroll, SuccessFactors, Kronos, and Spinifex (Help Desk, Reporter, Documents) – to run payroll and team-member lifecycle processes, maintaining confidentiality and data integrity across all records.
- Support process improvements and change delivery for key customer requirements and system changes and contribute to User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
- Contribute to a positive, cooperative working environment across service-delivery teams.
Qualifications – Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, HR, or related field.
- 2–4 years in end-to-end payroll processing or HR operations for Australia and New Zealand, ideally in high-volume environments.
- Strong knowledge of Australian payroll regulations, tax laws, and compliance, plus Recent Zealand legislation and enterprise agreements.
- Experience with HRIS and payroll systems – SAP (preferred), SuccessFactors, Kronos – and other ERP platforms.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets and data-analysis tools.
- Strong customer focus, communication, organization, and time management, with the learning agility to pick up new systems and processes quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven ability to deliver accurate, timely payroll and HR services across the full team-member lifecycle.
- Prior experience supporting payroll for a large, complex enterprise client (retail experience an advantage).
Key Skills & Attributes
- Confidentiality and strict data privacy.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in payroll calculations and compliance.
- Problem-solving to resolve payroll discrepancies effectively.
- Customer-focused, with strong stakeholder collaboration and communication.
- Learning agility and a proactive approach to continuous improvement, comfortable working autonomously and within a team.
