III. Key Responsibilities

• Responsible for the safe, comfortable and comprehensive nursing care for all patients under her/his care.

• Orient new Patient to the unit

• Responsible to perform all procedures as per hospital policies and protocols.

• Provide a safe and clean setting for the patients.

• Demonstrate skill in patient assessment, rounds, capturing and carrying out doctor’s orders, documentation, & equipment handling.

• To follow infection control policies and biomedical waste management guidelines.

• To be well groomed, punctual & adhere to company policies and practices.

• Coordinate patient care with various health care team members

• Carryout doctor’s orders and instructions promptly and intelligently.

• Before administering medication to patients make sure to take the proper precautions that each medication requires in order to avoid reactions and complications for e.g. Check blood sugar before administering Insulin and keep food ready. Check B/P before administering Anti-hypertensive medication,

• Make double checks before administering Narcotic drugs, High alert medication and blood transfusions. Make sure a second nurse is present while preparing and administering them.

• Observe changes in patient’s condition take necessary action, report and record.

• Responsible to impart special care and precautions to vulnerable patients.

• Impart health education to the patients as per their diagnosis and requirement.

• Responsible to maintain infection control practices during nursing care to the patients.

• Take equipment and drug inventory on daily basis and maintain records accordingly.

• Maintain good interpersonal relationship with nurse administrators, senior staff, juniors and students.

• Attend In-service education programmes in order to update knowledge and keep abreast of changes and trends in health and nursing care.

• Must be well versed with computers and the HIS





• Participates in conferences with team leader and makes up team assignments.

• Performs patient care within the principles of Nursing, reporting pertinent observations or complaints to the team leader and/or Head Nurse.

• Collaborate and co-ordinate care with other health professionals to ensure a quality service

• Communicate effectively, positively and courteously with patients and the health care team

• Resolves problems and conflicts effectively using organizational structures and processes

• Undertakes a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment of patients using suitable assessment tools underpinned by evidenced based knowledge

• Takes appropriate nursing actions in emergency situations and other situations that compromise patient safety.

• Responsible for day wise special assignments and completes them accurately and timely

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the delivery of patient centered care in compliance with the hospitals mission statement – for all cancer patients and their families through all treatment modalities i.e. surgery, chemotherapy.

• Ensure the safe administration of cytotoxic and all medications in accordance with the Hospital Policy .

• To provide holistic Palliative care to patients and their family.

• Maintain high standard of patient care and give a courteous and caring reception to all visitors and patients.

• Ensure that the Hospital’s Policy is understood and carried out with regard to the care and custody of drugs/medications especially with regard to high value medications and cytotoxic drugs





• Handle complaints in accordance with Hospital policy.

• Report all complaints, incidents or accidents to the nurse in charge or supervisor

• Assist and participate in the ward professional development programme.

• Practices infections controls measures to protect patient from acquiring or spreading infection. Demonstrates awareness of potential/actual risks of infection and modes of transmission. Utilizes universal precautions in nursing practice.

• Maintain continuity of care through clear and concise (verbal and written) communication.

• Takes responsibility of caring for all equipments and furniture and other related items in the unit realizing the need for cost effective and safe nursing care.

• Demonstrates willingness to adjust the work pattern as directed by the superiors. Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient and family.

• Implements emergency life resuscitative measures according to BLS & ACLS protocols.

• Apart from the above duties and responsibilities carry out any other duties assigned to her by the Nurse In-charge & Nursing Supervisor

Specialty area- Oncology Nurse/ / BMT Nurse

• Provides care for critically or chronically ill cancer patients.

• Preparation of the chemotherapeutic medicines in the admixture unit as per hospital protocol.

• Administer chemotherapy medication aseptically.

• Assist the doctor for different diagnostic procedures like lumbar puncture, bone marrow etc.

• Implement new methods of symptom treatment and monitor their patients' progress.

• Create a supportive environment.

• Educate cancer patients about treatment options, procedures and particularities of the disease, which requires that she constantly educate herself and keep up with new treatment methods.

• The occupation requires emotional stability to help patients and their families work through the treatment process and cope with death if treatment fails.
