Role Summary

We are seeking a visionary, results-driven, and hands-on Head of R&D; to lead our multidisciplinary engineering organization. In this role, you will own the entire product lifecycle—from concept, hardware architecture, schematic design, and embedded firmware development to pilot batch execution and SMT mass production handoff.

Your core mandate is to champion Product Quality, Long-Term Reliability, Timely Delivery, and Customer Delight, ensuring every product leaving our facility operates flawlessly in harsh industrial, solar, and field environments.

Key Responsibilities

- Product Architecture & Hardware Engineering Excellence

- Lead the architectural design and schematic/PCB layout for embedded systems utilizing microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32) and cellular/IoT communication modules (Quectel).
- - Enforce Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Testability (DFT) principles to ensure seamless pick-and-place, reflow soldering, and automated optical inspection (AOI) on our SMT lines.
- - Minimize post-release Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and maintain rigorous version control over Gerber files, BOMs, and schematics.

- Embedded Firmware & Connectivity Leadership

- Oversee firmware development standards for edge logic, secure bootloaders, Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, and robust industrial communication protocols (MQTT, Modbus RTU, Kafka).

- Ensure low-power optimization, watchdog recovery mechanisms, and bulletproof stability under continuous operational loads.

- Stage-Gate New Product Introduction (NPI) Governance

- Enforce a strict 5-Gate Release Protocol (Gate 0 to Gate 4) covering Requirement Freeze, EVT (Engineering Verification Test), DVT (Design Verification Test), PVT (Production Verification Test), and Mass Production.
- - Partner closely with QA, SMT factory operations, and procurement to sign off on test jigs, programming scripts, and pilot runs before commercial scaling.

- Reliability, Compliance & Field Robustness

- Drive pre-compliance testing for thermal burn-in, ESD protection, EMI/EMC,



voltage surge, and environmental stress to maintain field RMA rates below 0.5%.
- - Spearhead regulatory and scheme certifications (e.g., MNRE compliance for solar loggers, CE, RoHS, BIS, or defense standards).

- Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Mentor and scale a team of Hardware Design Engineers, Embedded Firmware Developers, QA Engineers, and CAD/Mechanical Technicians.
- - Coordinate seamlessly with Sales, Purchase, and Manufacturing to align BOM targets, multi-sourcing resilience, and project delivery schedules.

- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- Product Quality: 90% PCB First-Pass Design Yield; 0 Critical firmware bugs upon release; 100% ISO 9001:2015 documentation compliance.

- Reliability: < 0.5% 12-month field RMA rate; 95% pass rate on pre-compliance stress and environmental tests.
- - Timely Delivery (OTD): 90% on-time milestone delivery across EVT, DVT, and PVT stages; development schedule variance within 10%

- Customer Delight & Cost: 4.6 / 5.0 Customer Technical Acceptance (CSAT) score; adherence to target BOM costs for OEM/ODM deliverables.

Candidate Profile & QualificationsEducational Background
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related technical discipline.

- Professional Experience

- 15+ years of progressive engineering experience in electronic hardware design, embedded systems development, and IoT product manufacturing, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or departmental head role.

- Proven track record of taking complex electronic products from concept to high-volume SMT manufacturing.

Technical Competencies & Tech Stack
- Hardware: Advanced multi-layer PCB design (Altium Designer / KiCad), STM32, ESP32, power management ICs, RF layout considerations, and Quectel cellular/IoT modules.
- - Firmware: Embedded C/C++, FreeRTOS, Linux server integration (AlmaLinux), and IoT communication stacks (MQTT, Modbus RTU).
- - Manufacturing Ecosystem: Deep understanding of SMT component placement, stencil design, reflow profiling, automated test equipment (ATE), and supply chain component sourcing.

The Head of R&D; will mentor and guide team members, establish best practices, drive continuous improvement, and support strategic decisions through technical and market insights.

Qualifications

- Solid research and Research and Development (R&D;) skills with experience in concept-to-product lifecycle.
- Advanced Analytical Skills and Market Research capabilities to identify trends, technologies, and customer needs.
- Proven Team Leadership skills, including mentoring, project delegation, and cross-functional coordination.
- Deep knowledge of electronics, embedded systems, and IoT technologies; experience with GSM, RFID, GPRS, GPS, and sensor-based solutions is highly desirable.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related technical field.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple R&D; projects, ensure quality and timely delivery, and align outcomes with business strategy.
- Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in ISO-certified or similar quality-focused environments is an advantage.
