About the Role
About the Role We are looking for a firmware engineer who understands radios as well as code. You will build firmware for long-range, low-power wireless devices and test tools, from radio drivers and protocol stacks to key storage, over-the-air updates and field validation. You will think in link budgets, timing and security, not just in registers.
You will work directly with the Principal Architect on connected products where reliability in the field, power efficiency and security matter as much as features.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Radio and Protocol Firmware
- Develop and maintain LoRa and LoRaWAN protocol stacks (1.0.x and 1.1): activation, device classes, receive windows, MAC commands, adaptive data rate and regional parameters.
- Apply spread-spectrum and frequency-hopping radio concepts, and bring up new radio chipsets and modes behind a clean driver interface.
- Implement robust retry, acknowledgement and duplicate-handling strategies for lossy and high-latency links.
Link and RF Engineering
- Perform link-budget analysis and interpret sensitivity, interference and range-test data.
- Account for frequency stability and timing (crystal and TCXO choice, drift, offset handling) in radio design and firmware.
- Run field range and reliability trials, and turn the results into firmware and configuration improvements.
Security and Key Management
- Implement AES-128 and AES-CMAC correctly, and manage keys in protected storage or a secure element.
- Design secure device activation and key lifecycle: provisioning, rotation, revocation, and protected persistence of counters across resets.
- Build signed over-the-air updates with a secure boot chain.
Drivers, Gateways and Test
- Write SPI radio drivers and work with gateway-side software (concentrator HALs, packet forwarders and bridges) and timing sources.
- Build test infrastructure: Python simulators, hardware-in-the-loop automation, power profiling and instrument-based RF validation.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- BE/B.Tech/M.Tech in Electronics, Communications,
Embedded Systems or a related field.
Experience:
- 4–5+ years of embedded C/C++ on ARM Cortex-M with an RTOS.
- Hands-on wireless protocol work (LoRa/LoRaWAN or a similar low-power wide-area technology), including field debugging.
Technical Skills Required
Embedded Core
- FreeRTOS or Zephyr, interrupt-driven design, low-power design with measured sleep currents.
Radio and Protocols
- LoRa PHY parameters (spreading factor, bandwidth, coding rate), LoRaWAN MAC internals, modulation fundamentals, sensitivity and link-budget reasoning.
Security
- AES-CMAC and AES-CTR, key storage, secure boot, safe counter handling.
Instruments and Tools
- Spectrum analyser, power profiler, protocol sniffers, logic analyser, JTAG/SWD.
Software Tooling
- Python, Git and CI.
Preferred (Bonus) Skills
- SDR capture and analysis (IQ recordings, GNU Radio) and DSP fundamentals.
- GNSS and precise timing, or FPGA basics.
- Embedded Rust, and RF certification experience (WPC, ETSI, FCC).
