Job Purpose
The SPDT QC Engineer is responsible for quality inspection, measurement, and verification of components manufactured using Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) processes. The role ensures that optical and precision components meet stringent requirements for surface finish, surface form accuracy, dimensional tolerances, and optical performance. The engineer will work closely with production, process engineering, and metrology teams to identify defects, investigate non-conformities, and maintain consistent product quality in ultra-precision manufacturing.
Required Qualifications
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Precision Engineering, Metrology, or a related discipline.
Additional training in ultra-precision machining, or surface characterization is preferred.
Required Skills
Knowledge of Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) processes.
Understanding of optical surface form, surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T;, and customer inspection specifications.
Familiarity with interferometry, profilometry, optical microscopy and precision measurement systems.
Knowledge of non-conformance management, CAPA, FMEA, SPC, and root cause analysis.
Understanding of measurement uncertainty, calibration, and traceability.
Proficiency in preparing inspection reports and analysing measurement data.
Personal Attributes
Excellent attention to detail and analytical thinking.
Robust problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to work with high-precision measurement equipment.
1. Inspection and Quality Control Inspect SPDT-manufactured optical and precision components as per engineering drawings and customer specifications
Verify component dimensions, thickness, diameter,
flatness, surface form, and profile accuracy
Inspect optical surfaces for scratches, digs, tool marks, chatter marks, pits, burrs, and other surface defects
Inspect optical surfaces for scratches, digs, tool marks, chatter marks, pits, burrs, and other surface defects
Check surface roughness and surface quality using appropriate metrology equipment. Verify form error, surface irregularities, and profile deviations against specified tolerances. Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspection of components. Ensure proper handling, cleaning, and storage of ultra-precision optical components
1. Metrology and Measurement Operate and interpret measurements from instruments such as: Surface roughness tester, Contact or non-contact profilometer, Optical microscope and precision dimensional measuring instruments, Interferometric systems for surface form measurement
Review surface topography, roughness, and form measurement reports
Verify critical dimensions using calibrated instruments
Effective communication and teamwork.
Commitment to quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Ensure measurement repeatability and reliability through appropriate inspection methods and Maintain instrument calibration status and measurement records
1. SPDT Process Quality Understand the SPDT manufacturing process, diamond tool machining, and critical process parameters affecting quality
Identify machining-related defects, including tool marks, chatter, material tearing, edge rollover, and surface irregularities
Coordinate with production engineers to investigate defects caused by tool condition, machine vibration, work holding, material properties, or process parameters
Monitor component quality during machining trials and production runs
Support first-article inspection and new product qualification and Verify compliance with approved process plans and inspection procedures
4.Documentation and Quality Systems
Prepare inspection reports, measurement reports, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and final quality documentation
Maintain traceability of components, material batches, inspection results, and process records
Ensure compliance with customer specifications, engineering drawings, and applicable quality standards Support internal audits, customer audits, and quality system activities and Maintain records of rejected components, rework, concessions, and corrective actions.
1. Root Cause Analysis and Continuous Improvement •Investigate quality failures and perform root cause analysis using 8D & 5 Why, Fishbone Analysis, and other appropriate methods
•Coordinate corrective and preventive actions with manufacturing and engineering teams
•Analyze recurring defects and recommend improvements in machining and inspection processes
•Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce scrap, rework, and customer complaints
•Participate in measurement system analysis (MSA), gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R;), and process capability studies where applicable.
