1. Job Objective To ensure that all pre-machined and ground plates meet the customers specified dimensions, tolerances, and appearance requirements before dispatch. The candidate will be responsible for inspecting incoming material, monitoring machining quality, conducting final inspections, maintaining inspection records, and preventing defective material from reaching customers.
2. Key Responsibilities A. Incoming Material Inspection
Verify incoming material against the purchase order, job card, and customer requirements.
Check material dimensions and identify visible defects before machining.
Ensure proper identification of material grade, job number, and customer wherever applicable.
Report any dimensional discrepancies or visible defects before processing.
B. In-Process Quality Inspection
Inspect plates during pre-machining and grinding operations.
Check thickness, length, and width against the specified dimensions.
Verify that the material is machined according to the job card or customer drawing.
Identify dimensional deviations, uneven surfaces, scratches, dents, and other visible defects.
Inform machine operators and the production manager immediately when a quality issue is identified.
Ensure that defective or non-conforming material is separated and not mixed with accepted material.
C. Final Inspection Before Dispatch
Conduct final dimensional inspection of finished plates before dispatch.
Verify thickness, length, and width against the customer’s order requirements.
Check the appearance and surface condition of the material.
Inspect for unacceptable scratches, dents, deep tool marks, rust, burrs, and other visible defects.
Verify flatness or parallelism wherever specified by the customer.
Ensure that the final dimensions meet the agreed tolerances.
Approve the material for dispatch only after satisfactory inspection.
Ensure that the dispatch team receives the quality clearance.
D. Measuring Instruments and Equipment
Use appropriate measuring instruments such as:
Vernier calipers
Outside micrometers
Height gauges, where required
Dial indicators and suitable fixtures, where required
Straightedges and other suitable tools for specified flatness checks
Ensure that measuring instruments are properly maintained and calibrated.
Report damaged or inaccurate measuring instruments immediately.
E. Quality Documentation Maintain inspection records for every job or batch.
Record actual measured dimensions against the required dimensions.
Maintain a final inspection report for each customer order or batch.
Record rejected material, rework, and customer complaints.
Maintain records of recurring quality issues and their corrective actions.
Ensure that inspection records are traceable to the relevant job card, customer, and material identification.
F. Rejection and Corrective Action
Identify the reason for every rejection or dimensional deviation.
Coordinate with machine operators and the production manager to correct quality issues.
Ensure rejected material is clearly identified and segregated.
Monitor reworked material and reinspect it before approval.
Analyse repeated defects and recommend preventive measures.
G. Coordination and Process Improvement
Coordinate with production, dispatch, and management teams to maintain quality standards.
Communicate customer-specific inspection requirements to the production team.
Help establish standard inspection procedures for pre-machining and grinding.
- Suggest improvements to reduce rejection, rework, scrap, and customer complaints.
- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The candidate will be evaluated on the following parameters:
1. Customer rejection rate: Percentage of dispatched orders rejected due to quality issues.
2. Dimensional accuracy: Percentage of inspected jobs meeting the specified dimensions and tolerances.
3. Inspection compliance:
Percentage of jobs with completed inspection records before dispatch.
4. Internal rejection and rework: Reduction in defects identified during production and final inspection.
5. Customer complaints: Number of quality complaints attributable to machining or inspection failures.
6. Traceability: Accuracy and completeness of inspection and job records.
* Approximately 2–5 years of experience in quality inspection, machining, grinding, steel plates, or a similar manufacturing environment. Practical knowledge of engineering measurements and dimensional inspection.
Ability to read engineering drawings and understand dimensional tolerances.
- Experience using Vernier calipers, micrometers, and other relevant measuring instruments.
Basic knowledge of inspection reports, rejection handling, and corrective actions.
Candidates with hands-on experience in tool-room materials, die steels, plate machining, surface grinding, or CNC milling will be preferred.
- Personal Attributes
Strong attention to detail.
Honest, disciplined, and systematic in recording measurements.
Confident enough to stop or hold a job that does not meet specifications.
Positive communication with machine operators and production staff.
Willingness to take ownership of quality until the material is approved for dispatch.
- Authority and Accountability The Quality Inspector / Engineer will have the authority to:
Hold material that does not meet specified quality requirements.
Prevent dispatch of material pending quality clearance.
Raise non-conformance reports for defective material.
Recommend corrective action to production.
- Escalate recurring quality issues to management.
The candidate will be accountable for ensuring that inspection is completed and documented.
Production and management will remain responsible for implementing corrective actions and maintaining the overall quality system.
