Role & responsibilities
We are looking for a HUD & Optical Displays Engineer with 5 to 9 years of hands-on experience in the design, optical modeling and flight qualification of cockpit display systems. You will take technical responsibility for military avionics displays, including Head-Up Displays (HUD), Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMD), smart multi-function cockpit displays and collimating relay optics for fighter aircraft, trainers, helicopters and armored vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, model and evaluate HUD optical systems: relay lenses, off-axis collimating optics, waveguide combiners and HOE/DOE elements for wide field-of-view displays
- Run sequential and non-sequential ray tracing, stray light analysis, distortion mapping, binocular disparity analysis and pupil expansion modeling using Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V or LightTools
- Select and integrate high-luminance display engines (LCOS, MicroLED, OLED, high-brightness AMLCD), combiner coatings and optical filters for clear symbology under strong sunlight
- Design and validate dual-mode visible and IR lighting to meet MIL-STD-3009 / NVIS Class A/B requirements
- Work with mechanical teams on compact, lightweight housings, exit pupil alignment, vibration immunity and eye-motion box optimization
- Lead optical bench alignment, boresight alignment and photometric testing (luminance, contrast ratio, uniformity, chromaticity, distortion,
MTF)
- Plan and execute qualification per MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461 and JSS 55555
- Coordinate with DRDO, ADE, DARE, CEMILAC, DGAQA and aircraft OEMs
Required Skills
- 5 to 9 years designing, integrating, aligning or testing HUD, HMD or collimating display optics for aerospace/defense platforms
- High proficiency in Zemax OpticStudio, LightTools or Ansys Speos for display optics, distortion and stray light modeling
- Hands-on with photometric and colorimetric measurements and spectroradiometers
- Strong knowledge of thin-film dichroic coatings, polarizers, beam splitters and optical filters
- Practical exposure to MIL-STD-3009 (NVIS) and MIL-STD-810G / JSS 55555 qualification
Valuable to Have
- Experience with optical waveguides, diffractive gratings or HOEs for next-gen flat-panel HUDs/HMDs
- Knowledge of symbology generator interfaces, video signal processing or cockpit display hardware integration
- Python / MATLAB for automated photometric test bench control
