Assistant Kindergarten Teacher

Department: Early Childhood / Kindergarten

Training stage: Year 1

Working relationships: Class Teacher and Coordinator

Role purpose

Support the Class Teacher in creating a warm, safe and nurturing Waldorf kindergarten workplace. Assist with daily classroom rhythms, child care, creative activities and school programmes while developing teaching skills through observation, mentorship and Year 1 training.

Classroom support

Assist the Class Teacher with daily activities, sessions and transitions, including morning circle songs, verses and seasonal movement.

Support wet-on-wet watercolour painting, beeswax modelling, form drawing and seasonal crafts.

Prepare the seasonal and nature tables, art materials and snack setup before school. Keep the classroom tidy, warm and aesthetically aligned with Waldorf principles, and restore order after sessions.

Prepare props, the story corner and puppet setups as directed by the Coordinator.

Child care and supervision

Provide attentive, calm supervision during free play, snacks, transitions and outdoor activities. Respond patiently to children’s physical, emotional and social needs.

Build individual connections with every child and address children by name. Offer additional support to children who are shy, new or experiencing separation anxiety.

Allow children to lead their creative play, intervening when safety or wellbeing requires it.

Report wellbeing concerns promptly and confidentially to the Coordinator. Know and follow school emergency and first-aid protocols.

Observation and Year 1 training

Keep a regular observation journal covering classroom rhythms, activities,

play patterns and personal reflections. Document children’s physical, social, emotional and creative development.

Attend weekly mentorship check-ins with the Class Teacher, prepared with observations and questions.

Attend Waldorf orientation, internal workshops and staff development days. Read recommended early childhood texts and submit a brief monthly reading reflection.

Develop personal artistic skills, including singing, knitting, sewing and beeswax work.

Classroom administration and materials

Mark daily attendance accurately and flag unexplained absences to the Coordinator.

Update the materials inventory monthly and report replenishment needs for paints, beeswax, yarn, natural materials and snack supplies.

Care for classroom resources, including washing brushes, storing beeswax correctly and maintaining fabrics and natural items. Regularly source seasonal leaves, stones, flowers and pods for the nature table.

Assist with parent notices, newsletters and seasonal letters. Obtain the Coordinator’s review before dispatch.

Complete and submit a monthly classroom safety and hygiene checklist to the Coordinator.

Festivals and school events

Participate creatively in seasonal celebrations, including Diwali, Advent and Harvest. Help prepare decorations, costumes,

food and festival setups.

Support parent evenings, open days, performances and outings. Complete assigned event logistics punctually and reliably.

Parent interaction

Greet parents warmly and professionally at drop-off and pick-up, maintaining appropriate communication boundaries.

Refer parent queries, concerns and discussions about children’s development to the Coordinator rather than addressing these independently.

Protect children’s personal information and family circumstances at all times.

Qualified conduct and safeguarding

Arrive before children, maintain consistent attendance and follow school leave procedures.

Work respectfully with colleagues, staff and volunteers. Reflect Waldorf values in manner, speech and dress.

Avoid personal mobile devices or screens in the classroom or in view of children.

Maintain confidentiality about children, families, staff and school affairs. Do not share school matters on personal social media or with people outside the school community.

Report safeguarding concerns or ethical issues to the Coordinator. If not addressed, escalate immediately to the Academic Head.
