About the Role

About the Role We are looking for a hands-on Embedded Linux engineer to build lean, secure, field-updatable Linux images for ARM-based edge computers, including SoC-plus-FPGA and industrial boards. You will own the path from bootloader to root filesystem, so that images are small, survive power loss, update safely and rebuild reproducibly, even without internet access.

You will work directly with the Principal Architect on long-lifecycle, high-reliability products where memory is tight and every dependency must justify itself.

Key Responsibilities

Platform and Image Engineering

- Own Yocto/OpenEmbedded layers (distro, machine and image recipes) and the build flow (kas or repo).
- Produce minimal images (musl/BusyBox or systemd) within strict size, RAM and boot-time budgets, along with a developer SDK.
- Run offline, reproducible builds with source and sstate mirrors, vendored dependencies and pinned versions.
- Generate SBOMs and licence reports, and enforce licence policy at build time.
- Evaluate OpenWrt or Buildroot where they are the better fit.

Bootloader, Kernel and Drivers

- Customise U-Boot (SPL, FIT images, environment, A/B slot logic) and the Linux kernel (minimal configuration, device tree and overlays).
- Write and debug drivers for SPI, UART, I2C, USB, Ethernet, watchdog, RTC, GPIO and pin control.
- Bring up SoC-plus-FPGA platforms: programmable-logic device trees, and real-time cores with remoteproc and OpenAMP.
- Tune latency and real-time behaviour, including PREEMPT_RT where needed.

Update, Security and Resilience

- Implement A/B updates with automatic rollback (RAUC, SWUpdate or Mender) and a read-only root with overlay.
- Build a secure boot chain: signed images, dm-verity, key handling, and TPM or TrustZone/OP-TEE integration.
- Design power-fail-safe storage (ext4, F2FS, UBIFS, SQLite durability) and watchdog and health strategies.
- Design for bit errors and wear: error-correction awareness, integrity checks and recovery.

Quality, Performance and CI

- Profile boot time and memory (perf, ftrace, bootchart, smem) and add image-size regression checks.
- Build CI for images with QEMU and hardware-in-the-loop tests,



and write transparent runbooks.

Required Qualifications

Education:

- BE/B.Tech/M.Tech in Electronics, Embedded Systems, Computer Science or a related field.

Experience:

- 4–5+ years in embedded Linux, with at least one product shipped on a Yocto-based or similar custom image.
- Hands-on bootloader and kernel work on ARM platforms.

Technical Skills Required

Yocto and Build Systems

- Layers, bbappend, devtool, SDK generation, sstate and download mirrors, SPDX and licence controls.

Bootloaders and Kernel

- U-Boot, FIT images and secure boot, device tree, kernel configuration and debugging.

Storage, Update and Security

- squashfs and overlayfs, dm-verity, RAUC/SWUpdate/Mender, hardened userland.

Hardware and Debug

- JTAG/SWD, serial consoles, logic analyser, oscilloscope, crash-dump analysis.

Languages and Tooling

- Strong C, shell and Python; Git and CI; cross-compilation for aarch64 and armv7.

Preferred (Bonus) Skills

- Zynq-class SoC-plus-FPGA work with vendor tooling.
- High-reliability design experience (fault containment, integrity checks, error correction).
- Rust, and familiarity with open-source licences (MIT, Apache, GPL, AGPL).
