Country Manager India
About the role
Position: Country Manager India (Finance, Accounting & Compliance) Location: Chennai, with travel to client sites and banks as needed Reports to: Managing Director (Europe) Type: Full time, permanent Experience: 8–12 years post-qualification, of which at least 3 leading an accounting/compliance team
Our client is an international consulting firm that helps foreign companies set up and run their businesses in India. Its India team provides accounting, statutory compliance and corporate support to the Indian subsidiaries of multinational clients.
We are looking for a senior, hands-on Country Manager who will own the full compliance calendar of our client portfolio and make sure every filing, audit and closing happens on time. The core of the role is accounting and statutory audit: you will lead the team that keeps the books, coordinate the auditors, and be personally accountable for the financial statements of every client entity being finalised, audited and filed within the legal deadlines.
This is a leadership role with real autonomy. We value transparency above all: we expect you to report the true status of every entity to management in Spain, early and clearly, including problems and delays.
Key responsibilities
1. Accounting and audit (core of the role)
- Own the monthly, quarterly and annual closing of all client entities; books kept in Odoo.
- Prepare financial statements under Schedule III of the Companies Act, 2013 (Indian GAAP / Ind AS where applicable).
- Plan and coordinate the statutory audit of every entity: audit timeline, schedules, reconciliations and responses to auditor queries.
- Coordinate tax audits and ensure income tax returns, TDS returns and GST returns are filed on time.
- Review the team's work: bank,
vendor, intercompany and GST reconciliations; accruals; fixed assets.
- Maintain a single compliance calendar for the portfolio, with each entity's status visible to management at all times.
2. Statutory and corporate compliance
- Ensure board meetings, AGMs and ROC filings (AOC-4, MGT-7, DIR-3 KYC, etc.) are completed within deadlines, working with our Company Secretary and corporate team.
- Oversee FEMA/RBI reporting for foreign-owned companies (FC-GPR, FLA return, ODI/ECB where applicable).
- Flag compliance risks and penalties before they happen, not after.
3. Banking
- Manage relationships with banks for client entities: account opening, KYC updates, inward remittances, FIRCs/e-BRCs and payment releases.
- Resolve banking issues promptly so that clients receive and make payments without delay.
4. Team leadership
- Lead, plan and supervise the India accounting team; set clear deadlines and monitor delivery.
- Hire, train and evaluate team members; build documented processes and checklists.
5. Client and management reporting
- Act as the senior point of contact in India for the finance teams of our European clients.
- Send a weekly status report to the Managing Director: deadlines, entities at risk, open issues — accurate and unvarnished.
Qualifications and experience
Required
- Chartered Accountant (CA) — mandatory.
- 8–12 years of post-qualification experience in accounting, statutory audit and compliance.
- At least 3 years managing a team of accountants with responsibility for multiple entities at once.
- Proven track record of closing books and getting audits signed and filed on time for a portfolio of companies.
- Solid working knowledge of the Companies Act 2013, Income Tax Act, GST, TDS and FEMA reporting for foreign-owned subsidiaries.
- Experience dealing with banks (account opening, KYC, remittances).
- Fluent professional English, written and spoken.
Preferred
- Experience in a mid-size CA firm or an accounting outsourcing / compliance services firm, managing several client entities in parallel.
- Experience serving Indian subsidiaries of foreign (ideally European) companies.
- Hands-on experience with an ERP (Odoo, Tally, SAP or similar); strong Excel.
- Familiarity with group reporting to a foreign parent (IFRS or local GAAP packs).
Who we are looking for
- Deadline-driven: you plan backwards from statutory deadlines and do not miss them.
- Transparent: you escalate bad news early and give management a true picture, always.
- Hands-on leader: you can review a reconciliation yourself and also get the best out of a team.
- Organised: you build processes, checklists and trackers that make delivery predictable.
- Client-minded: comfortable working with international clients and different time zones.
What we offer
- A senior leadership role with direct access to the Managing Director and real decision-making authority.
- Exposure to a portfolio of multinational companies operating in India.
- Competitive compensation, plus a performance bonus linked to on-time compliance.
