- Primary Care for Adults: They serve as general health providers for adults, handling routine check-ups, acute sicknesses (like infections or flu), and everyday health concerns. Unlike family medicine doctors, internists exclusively treat adult patients. [1, 2]

- Chronic Disease Management: They manage long-term and complex conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, and heart disease. [1, 2]

- Diagnostic "Detectives": They specialize in evaluating undifferentiated symptoms, complicated medical histories, and multi-organ interactions. [1, 2]

- Specialist Coordination: They act as central coordinators, referring patients to subspecialists (such as cardiologists or endocrinologists) and synthesizing their care. [1, 2]

- Inpatient and Outpatient Care: While many work in private or clinic-based outpatient offices, others work exclusively inside hospitals as hospitalists managing admitted patients. [1, 2]
