An Assembly Fitter in the steel and heavy-metal fabrication industry is a skilled tradesperson responsible for reading technical drawings, shaping and aligning metal components, and assembling heavy machinery, rolling mill equipment, or structural steel units to exact specifications .

Job Summary

- Role Purpose: To produce, fit, align, and assemble steel components, sub-assemblies, or heavy industrial machinery with high dimensional accuracy.

- Core Setting: Steel plants, rolling mills, heavy fabrication workshops, or machinery manufacturing units .

Key Responsibilities

- Drawing Interpretation: Study and interpret complex 2D/3D engineering drawings, structural blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerances (GD&T;), and welding symbols.

- Layout &
- Material Preparation:

Perform precise marking, measuring, cutting, grinding, deburring, and edge preparation (beveling) on steel plates, beams, channels, and structural frames.

- Mechanical Fitting &

- Alignment:

Align, fit, clamp, and fasten heavy steel parts, bearings, chocks, rolls, or frames using jacks, turnbuckles, measuring tools, and assembly fixtures.

- Tack Welding &

- Fastening:

Perform basic tack welding (SMAW, MIG, or FCAW)



or mechanical bolting/riveting to secure components before final permanent welding.

- Quality &

- Dimensional Checks:

Inspect squareness, flatness, gaps, alignment, and critical dimensions using precision measuring instruments like vernier calipers, micrometers, and height gauges.

- Maintenance &

- Rework:

Assist in dismantling, troubleshooting, repairing, or replacing worn-out mechanical parts during equipment installation or mill overhauls.

- Safety &

- Housekeeping:

Operate overhead cranes, flame-cutting torches, and power tools strictly following plant safety (PPE, 5S) and ISO quality standards.

Required Qualifications &

- Education

- Education: ITI (Industrial Training Institute) in Fitter, Welder, or Sheet Metal Worker trade (Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is often preferred for senior or heavy plant roles).

- Experience: 2 to 5+ years of hands-on experience in structural steel fitting, heavy metal fabrication, or rolling mill assembly .

Pay: ₹15,000.00 - ₹22,000.00 per month
