- Project description This project will expand the work being done under Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan (UMA) aligned with the development goals of the Tata Centre for Technology and Design (TCTD) at IIT Bombay. TCTD was established with the support from the Tata Trusts in 2014, and works in the areas of Agriculture and food, education, workplace, health, housing, water, and waste management. It works on an innovation to deployment model. UMA is an initiative that addresses development challenges at a local level by involving regional engineering colleges, training, and connecting them to the relevant line departments. Colleges have contributed to projects in the areas of energy, drinking water, and roads and transport. At the same time,

limited technical capacity and orientation towards project-based learning in the colleges, are creating a bottleneck in the UMA delivery model. Current methods and curricula are leading to poor capability development for abstract thinking, ability to self-learn and of knowledge in the sector. We propose here an intervention to change teaching methods in colleges from the existing theoretical and abstract inductive approach to a deductive approach with a real-world orientation. The proposed pedagogical change addresses employability and capability of graduates as well as developing a strong institutional base for projects and contribution to development outcomes. Digitalization is underway in India, but there is a lack of understanding of value-addition possibilities, many of which are at local points. Involvement of colleges and connection to local problems can provide a major fillip to value addition. Outcomes: The project would lead to textbook and educational material development, faculty development and training, and be integrated with the syllabus of colleges in the state. This will result in a roadmap for pedagogical change for the country setting up students for lifelong learning. It will also lead to increased professional participation of colleges and fresh graduates in regional development. Possible sector(s) to be targeted: Roads and Transportation; Power systems including electricity distribution, solar photovoltaics and battery storage systems; Water resources including drinking water systems, irrigation through canals, piped water distribution; Programming: Python / GIS / Databases
- programming runs through all themes .
These courses while inter-disciplinary are particularly relevant to Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering For more on TCTD see: http://www.tatacentre.iitb.ac.in/ https://www.iitb.ac.in/academic-divisions/tata-centre-technology-and-design-tctd For more on UMA see: https://homepages.iitb.ac.in/~umaiitbombay/
