The Senior Quality and Test Automation Engineer leads quality strategy and automation for complex features, services, and end-to-end workflows. The role remains hands-on while shaping testability, framework design, nonfunctional coverage, release risk, and engineering practices across one or more delivery teams.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Define risk-based quality strategies, automation scope, entry and exit criteria, test data, environments, dependencies, and evidence for complex initiatives.
- Design and implement robust automation across API, contract, integration, event, data, UI, and end-to-end layers, selecting the most effective test level for each risk.
- Lead automation architecture within the product area by creating reusable libraries, patterns, utilities, and diagnostics that teams can maintain at scale.
- Influence system and feature design for testability, observability, failure isolation, deterministic behavior,
secure data handling, and operational resilience.
- Integrate quality gates and parallelized automated suites into CI/CD; manage flaky tests, execution efficiency, environment constraints, and actionable reporting.
- Plan and guide performance, reliability, resilience, security, accessibility, compatibility, and recovery validation in partnership with specialized teams.
- Analyze logs, traces, metrics, database state, service interactions, and code to isolate complex failures and lead root-cause investigations.
- Assess production change risk and present evidence-based release recommendations, known limitations, and mitigation or rollback plans.
- Establish meaningful measures for escaped defects, risk coverage, automation value, flakiness, defect containment, and feedback-cycle time.
- Lead requirement and design reviews, identify cross-system and edge-case risks, and ensure quality work is planned early rather than deferred to the end of delivery.
- Mentor Quality Engineers and SDETs through pairing, design and code reviews, debugging guidance, and consistent engineering standards.
- Collaborate across product, development, architecture, DevOps, support, security, data, and business teams to resolve systemic quality issues and improve delivery practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or equivalent practical experience.
- Typically 7+ years in software quality engineering or development, with advanced hands-on automation and technical leadership experience.
- Strong programming and framework-design skills in Java, Python, TypeScript, C#, or a comparable language; advanced experience with APIs, SQL, Git, CI/CD, and distributed applications.
- Proven ability to lead quality strategy for complex integrations and end-to-end workflows, including nonfunctional and production-readiness considerations.
- Expertise in debugging across application, service, data, infrastructure, and pipeline layers and in converting findings into sustainable engineering improvements.
- Robust influence, mentoring, stakeholder communication, prioritization, and risk-management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cloud-native platforms, containers, service virtualization, observability, performance engineering, and security-focused automation.
- Experience delivering software in healthcare or another regulated environment with strict privacy, auditability, and data-integrity requirements.
